Default Slow shifting auto trans in Jeep

I have a 98 TJ with the six and the 3 speed auto. It has a pretty lazy shift from 1st to 2nd, especially under power. The upshift from 2nd to 3rd feels normal to me.

Is there anything I can do to remedy this problem? I find this slow shift very annoying.

thanks

Default slow shifting

the shift your talking about is normal for that trans. chrysler put alot of delay for smooth shifting. most customers i get in the dealer ship want even smother shifts. the first thing you can do if your on a budget have the trans serviced tell the shop to raise the line preasure adjustment 2 turns. tighten the kickdown band adjustment 1/2to 3/4 turn and make the kickdown cable/rod longer this will help . this will firm up shift some. but if you have some money to spend i would put a complete shift kit in the trans . i would go with a trans go or fair banks. the trans is called a 32rh fancy name for a 998 (904 with lockup)

Default thanks and a followup question

Thanks for the information. Can any of these adjustments be made externally or do they require some entrance into the transmission?

Also, what does changing the kickdown adjustment do?

Default adjustments

the kickdown band can be done from the outside and so can the kickdown cable/or rod is outside the preasure is inside
