Help Cheap steel wheels - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hi all,

My parents just bought a beauty 1998 Grand Cherokee, and my Dad wants to mount a set of studded snow tires on some cheap run-of-the-mill 15" steel rims for winter to help preserve the finish on the alloy wheels.

The question is, where can we find cheap replacement wheels? I read in a Mopar Action mag article where the old muscle cars can run the newer Jeep wheels, and I was wondering if that also means that the newer Jeeps can use the older car steel wheels?

Or does anyone know where a decent set of 15" steel wheels can be bought new for a low price. They don't have to be stylish, just functional.

As always, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you have a set laying around, I Don't see why not, otherwise I'd just look for either Junkyard Jeep or Dodge truck 5 bolt rims and let the muscle car guys have the older rims. Unless you go for the Cop Car wheels, or Plain steelies with "Poverty Caps" I think most older muscle car era wheels just won't look good on the late model XJ and ZJ (I just can't see Rally Wheels or Magnum 500's on one). I wouldn't mind the older wagon spoked aluminum Cherokee/Comanche wheels though. Those always look good on the XJ and I think they would look good on the ZJ too.

Well, that's sort of the problem, we don't have a set, or even a single steel wheel laying around to try, and none of the junkyards in their area will even let them try a wheel first to see if it fits, they have to buy it before they can try it to see if it's going to fit and clear the disc brakes.

I wasn't meaning the Rally wheels or the Magnums or anything like that, I was only thinking about the plain steel wheels on that era of cars.

It sucks because just a few years ago he had a 70 Fury with 15" wheels just sitting there doing nothing with it, then he sold it to a junkyard. So more than likely he had a set of wheels that would have worked, but doesn't have them any more.

Yea, I understand, we have a set of 15x7 steel wheels of a '70 Charger R/T my parents used to own still in the garage but we've never tried them on any of the 5 Jeeps we've owned. The main problem, if at all would be backspacing but if I remember right from the article, that would work for us since they may have a little bit of positive offset. The only problem other than caliper clearance would be possible tire rubbing from the different offset. Dad has hat some tire rubbing on his '90 XJ from running 235/75/r15 Wranglers on his and the ZJ I used to own had 245/70/r15 Wranglers that had no rubbing problems what so ever.

Any cheap steel wheel from a Cherokee, Commanche, or Wrangler will fit from 84-98. I have a set of steel 'star' rims,
but it would cost you more than they are worth to ship. But I'll
send you a picture so you know what to look for if you want.

You can get cheap steelies from www.tirerack.com if your local boneyards won't help.

I think he's on to something here, this may be the best bet for you guys. As long as they don't charge an arm and a leg for them.

well, if the bolt pattern is the same as a regular cherokee you can find some cheap used ranger wheels and they should fit.

I tried going to the Tire Rack site, and all they are showing is the expensive alloy wheels. Where can I find the cheap steel wheels there?

Look for a section that lists "take offs" with the snow/winter tires. They usually sell snow tires with some kind of generic steel wheel or a discarded factory steel rim. It should be hitting their magazine ads by now.

What do they look like? I may have some damaged bolt holes on mine and may need to replace them (I'm hoping for just a shifted or broken cord in tire).
