Seattle is planning an experiment to improve intersection level of service (how well an intersection accommodates traffic), by replacing ten traffic signals with four-way stop signs. The theory behind the experiment is that with a four way stop the drivers are moving slower as they approach the intersection and they are more attentive, both of which will reduce or minimize traffic impacts. Obviously, this is only practical under certain conditions and is not a cure-all. I know one of the hardest things to teach both my kids was how to negotiate a busy four way stop sign controlled intersection. One definite benefit, four stop signs costs around $1800. A traffic signal for the same intersection costs around $70,000.

From my experience, 4-way stops bring out the dumb in drivers. If four vehicles hit the stop at about the same time, it seems that nobody wants to be "impolite" and go first...totally ignoring the right-of-way rules in their state.
At least a traffic light removes all ambiguity. |
