Default Cars I Almost Bought

The one that got away; there are always those cars that for whatever reason we considered, then dismissed. Sometimes we look back on those near misses and thank our lucky stars. Other times that hindsight results in feelings of regret.

I regret passing on the pristine AAR back in 1984, I didn't like the Deep Burnt Orange color so I couldn't justify spending $3500 on it.

I'm sad about the '70 Green Go convertible Superbee I didn't buy because it had a little rust on the quarterpanels.

I don't mind having passed on the '73 318 green Charger with a green interior, or the giant, gold Imperial with a gold interior although it did have a 440.

In the mid 90s I passed on a 4.0 Ford Ranger and a nice 4WD Comanche in favor of a more pedestrian 2.9L 2WD Ranger, the first and only vehicle I've had to take to the shop because of a lightening strike.

I regret buying a Plymouth Acclaim instead of a Stealth back in '91. Not that the Acclaim was a bad car, it wasn't even my first 4 door, but it had to be one of the most boring cars I've ever owned.

The last vehicle I regret not purchasing was a last year LHS, I bought a used Dakota instead because the deal was just too good to pass up.

Biggrin

I look at it the other way of cars I have owned but wished I had kept. But first, here is a list of the cars I have bought brand new:

1964 Dodge Polara 500 hardtop, 383 High Perf, 4 yank and SureGrip.
1965 Dodge Coronet 500 hardtop 318 Torqueflite.
1966 Dodge Coronet 440 Convertible 318 Torqueflite.
1968 Dodge Coronet Super Bee 383 High Performance, 4 yank and Sure Grip.
1971 Dodge Polara 9 passenger station wagon 383 Torqueflite.

1977 AMC Pacer wagon.

1979 Toyota 4X4 Sport Truck.
1979 Toyota Land Cruiser.
1984 Toyota Camry 4dr sedan.
1985 Toyota Supra.
1987 Toyota 4X4 Sport Truck.
1989 Toyota Supra Turbo.
1989 Toyota All Trac Wagon.

1993 Ford Ranger 4X4 Pickup.

1996 Dodge 2500 4X4 Pickup 360 5 yank and Sure Grip.
2006 Dodge 1500 Megacab 4X4 Hemi automatic.
2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

I also had the following company cars from new:

1967 Ford Custom 4 door sedan.
1970 Chevrolet Bel Air sedan.
1973 Chevrolet Impala Sedan
1976 Chevrolet Malibu coupe.

I bought 2 used cars:

1977 Dodge Coronet 9 passenger wagon.
Above mentioned 1976 Chevrolet Malibu after company lease ran out.

So, I have had a bunch of cars and all were serviceable. Back in the 60's, you could flip a car every year and keep your payments with in couple of bucks.

All in all, my favorite cars were the 1968 Super Bee, the 1973 Chevrolet Impala, The 1985 Toyota Supra and the 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo. The 1966 Coronet 440 convertible would get honorable mention.

All the cars served me well but the Super Bee was always special. I ordered it to my spec and it arrived in less than 3 weeks. I had to sell it after a couple of years because I couldn't justify keeping it with a new company car sitting in the driveway.

Of the cars on your list I really like the 1956 Dodge Coronet 500 hardtop. I have to say, you've had your share of nice cars.

Typo! That is supposed to be a 1965 Coronet 500 Hardtop.

Trading every year was foolish but I was young and had to have the latest and greatest. My car buying tapered off as my family grew. The 1971 Polara 9 passenger wagon was a hard pill to swallow. However, it had the de-tuned 383 4bbl rated at 300 horses. I added dual exhaust. It was OK and good for hauling 4 kids around. I hung on to it for 6 years. One problem was the tires that were year specific for the big Dodge wagon and the Chrysler Town and Country wagon. They were L84-15 and weren't made for very long. They were exclusive OEM for Chrysler and Dodge. My dad managed to locate 2 and shipped them to me when I needed tires. Eventually, I went with L78-15 because the 84's had dried up.
