I just heard about a study conducted in the D.C. area that involved some new-car safety options. Most drivers, like 80%, leave collision avoidance programs turned on. However, about half of drivers turn off lane drift warnings. Evidently the lane drift warnings sound off so often they are perceived to be annoying.

I drove a Ford Explorer that had lane drift warning and there was no alarm, it just shook the steering wheel enough to get your attention. New cars that have electric power steering can be programmed to do things like that.
I do like the back-up cameras though! |

Was the Explorer you drove a "law enforcement" model?

Drove a GMC that will steer you back into your lane if you cross the line. Don't even hold the steering wheel and it will keep you in your lane. You just weave from line to line.
Personally I'm not a fan of any of this safety crap. HATE memory power seats and mirrors that point to the ground when you put it in reverse. If they made cars with a back window you could see out of you wouldn't need a camera, although when hitching a trailer I could see a camera being convenient. Had a GMC in the shop the other day, front radar took a crap. Needed the module $1000, plus have to remove the bumper to replace it. So $1500 later, his cruise would finally work. Completely ridiculous. |
