The weak point is the diameter of the stem on the pinion gear. I'm sure that it will hold up to your setup with no problems.

I've had a 741 3.91 in my 70 Coronet with a 440 for many years, and no problems.

You'd need a lot more weight and motor than ou ahve to worry about breaking it.

You will be fine.

JFFT - Why are you going 4.10s? unless you have 28-30" tall tires you will reving the 318 pretty high for street use.
Unless its all Race I suggest 3.55s or 3.91s as you likely have 26-27" tall tires.
JMHO.
No worries withe 741.

by the way - I have a 741 case - w3.91s going to the swap meet in Reddeer this Saturday. Pm me if interested.

I had a 318 w/340 x heads ported w/ 10.25:1 kb's and a 509 lift mp purple shaft, weiand tunnel ram and a 727 mvb/3000 stall into a 9" with a 5.88 spool on 31" mickey's and the front end popped off the ground all the time, hense the comp engineering wheeeely bars. LOL. Had to let that car go, but I will never forget that feeling. I am buying a 74 swinger 225/6-904 now, and it will be a bit more sreetable, I highly recommend that if you plan to drive this car much, for the sake of economy and for keeping the rev's at a reasonable level you might want 3:70's, 3:91's tops fpr a dual purpose, but 3:55's to 3:70's seem to be the ticket for ripper street fun and realistic manners in traffic. These guys have taught me alot in a very short time, more info in a few days than I could get in years on my own...Good luck!!

I've had 450 HP to a 741 case with 4.10 cogs. It's been a long time since I have installed them At least 15 years. No problems.

To break any pinion gear on the 8 3/4 is pretty rare. 741,742, or 489 case. Like they have said...I brutalized a 340 A-body car with a 741 carrier and 4.89 gears and slicks. Never broke it. You should be fine.

so 3.73's would be a wiser choice for a street machine, thats good because anything more is difficult to find for this 741 case.

With an automatic trans you won't have any problem.
I have been running a 3.91:1 741 case in my #4,100 Charger that has over 450 rear wheel HP and it hasen't had any problems.

Yes, 3.73s are harder to find for a 741 case...

We resorted to getting them from 1960 6-cyl Plymouths. That's the only cars in which they came standard, apparently. They might have also been the earlier case, with a number that predated the 741 but was the same thing.

I have seen some run-out stock of 3.73 CWPs for a 741 on eBay, but it's a year or so ago.

They're out there, however. All the same, I'd be more tempted to go with 3.55s... there's not much difference in the ratio, it's much easier to get them and you will cut a bit of wear from the engine.
