Most important measurement is the closed length...

So you work out what the length of the shock has to be with the bump rubbers compressed as they would be when hitting a big bump. Then deduct about half an inch from that figure just to be safe.

Then everything is determined by the amount of travel you want to have. So you add that to the closed length and go hunting for a shock to suit... or move one of your mounts so a shock will suit.

Basic rules are:

1. Bottom out the shock (by not allowing that safety margin of half an inch or more) and you will wipe out the piston and render it useless.

2. Top out the shock (have it so short when open that it picks up the wheel) then you will get iffy handling on undulating corners and wheelspin over bumps.

Listen to ray, I had kyb's on a SS spring car one time and every time I hit a bump the rear wheels would sometimes come off the ground cause the shocks weren't long enough!

should one shock be in front of axle and one in back ?like on my truck or both be in back? its really narrowed with huge M/T street tires.i figure one mount on frame and bottom on the u=bolt mounts.this is a 33dodge pritty narrow.around 36 inches drum to drum.
