Im interested in building a 451 using a 400 block. I've seen various kits advertised, but i dont think ive seen a cam or head recommendations for these kits. I want to build a reliable street engine thats capable of mid 11s in a fairly stock 70 e-body.

Hi JoeD. I am researching a similar project, (see thread on Street Sleeper). Feel free to email me at richardd@slip.net if you want to compare notes.

Any good head for a 383/400/440 will work great here. 906s seem to be the standard ut sometimes hard to find. 452s are also good and include the hardned seats for unleaded fuel.

Get a good 3 angle valve job go with the high performance valve springs for extra insurance especially if you go with a hot cam.

For the street you will want your compression ratio around 9.5:1 in order to use pump gas. You can get close to this through a combination of piston selection and milling the heads.

I would use the heads that came off your four hundred but to get any kind of decent power you will need to port them using Mopar Perfomance porting templates. This and the new springs already mention will go along way to producing a good engine you will enjoy.

Cam and carb it just like a 440. The motor thinks it is a 440 since it has the 440 rod to stroke ratio (as long as you use 440 rods that is). It is just a lightweight 440 so you don't have to get tricky with any "stroker magic" cams or anything.
