Which starter?
I have been using a 17084 mopar mini starter on my 340 engine. I bought this starter in 1999 and it is making a loud grinding noise a few times and not engaging until about the 3rd or 4th try. The starter has worked well until now and I was going to replace it with another. Someone suggested I get a 17466 mini starter that is a newer mopar starter that is a bit more compact but just as powerful and is advertised as a high torque starter. I believe they came in Dodge trucks from 1990-95. Anyone have any info on these starters and if one is better than the other? New starter will be going on my 340 with 10.8 CR.

The starter from a Dodge Magnum V6 or V8 from 1990 till the end of the 360 will fit. But the later ones (I think 1999) use a sealed terminal. So I'd stay with 1998 and under.
These starters will fit all of the old V8's big block or small block and will also fit the /6. Some starters have a terminal riser that can be removed. With the riser on, the battery cable stud hit on my 400, just remove the two nuts and riser problem was solved. |
