what is the best way to install freeze plugs? i have tried the socket method, but i just can't seem to get it in straight.also i am confused if i put sealant around it or not.

Get a deep well socket that just fits the plug and some epoxy cement and you should be ok.

You can coat the back with RTV the night before if you are using steel, brass will not need this due to superior corrosion resistance.
