Default pre load

Take hyd. lifters to zero lash and turn 1.5 to 2 turns more.

I have ran them as little as 1/2 a turn from zero pre load.

Thumbs down Too Much

2 is plenty in my opinion, half to one full turn is enough. Too much and you end up
breaking parts, floating valves etc. Compromise? yep 3/4 of a turn as a rule will do the job.

This isn't black magic, Most cam manufacutres recommend 0.020" to 0.060" of lifter pre-load for the hydraulic lifters.

Since most of the adjustable rocket arms use an adjusting nut that has 24 TPI threads, it is easy to calculate the amount of movement/pre-load one turn creates.
With 24 Threds per inch adjusters means to move the adjustment 1" requires 24 turns of the adjuster.
Dividing 1 by 24 = 0.041667" per turn.
If your adjuster has a different thread pitch you can calculate it the same way.

Anyhow, one full turn from zero pre-load should put you into the center of the pre-load specification.

Default preload

In our dirt motors, we use a lot of hyd. cams, and also solid lift cams too, on the hyd. we use a hi-rev lifter(anti pump-up) and set them to 0 lash, the normal hyd. lifters we set to 1/8-1/4 turn past 0 lash. anymore than that always caused valve float over 4 grand in rpm

Thumbs up

My 2-cents:
The 0.020 to 0.060 is what Lunati recommends with there hydraulic lifters, too. Lifters made for zero preload (anti pump up) will say so. In my opinion, a good lifter with an internal snap ring to hold the guts in can be set at 0.010-0.020 for best results (1/4-1/2 turn), but those like Mopar Performance lifters with a wimpy wire retainer should stay 0.020 or more so the wire retainer doesn't get pounded out.
