I'm in the middle of building my short box with a 440 and need advise on the rear end to go with . It currently has a dana 44 that originaly came with the truck , or I have a couple 3/4 ton parts trucks with larger diffs. Is it worth the hassle or will the dana 44 do. Also what rears should I be running with a three speed on the 440?

little440(does that mean its not bored out?!!!)The rear of choice i would use is the 8.75,its found in mid 70s 1/2t pickups, even in 4wds too,its strong ,plentiful as are parts, the 44 will work too but Ive not seen 1 in hte rear of a 1/2t before, you may have a 9.25 which is very common but parts are expensive and hard to find especially gears although it will handle the power.I wouldnt use a dana 60 from a 3/4t unless your going to really haul/tow serious amounts of weight..........PRO.....

I own a 78 pw with 360, 727, 203, dana 44 front, and 9.25 rear w/3.55 gears. If it is a 1/2 ton truck, it probably had the 9.25, they only used the dana 44 for the front axle i'm pretty sure. 9.25 seem to be real strong, i run the piss outta mine (muddin, towing, etc.), and it has held up real well. my 2 cents worth
