I've got a 78 440 block I think, but I can't find any reference materials for the id pad. The engine numbers are P4006630-440-4 which should put it 1978 right? The id pad says 7 T 440 E and below that it has 1 5 but I can't make out the last number maybe a 2. Could someone check this for me so I can be sure.

Thanks
Rob

the 7 means 1977(most likely came in a 78 model as most dates on engines will predate actual vehicle date by up to 9 mos) the T means truck, the rest Im not sure,it could be a complete date(01/05/??)hope this helps....PRO...

As PRO said the stamping 7T440 indicates it was made in 1977. The casting number is listed as used in 1978 in the HP book, "Big Block Mopar Engines". Look at the passenger side of the block, above the casting number it should also have the casting date as part of the casting (see photo). The stamped E after 440 indicates cast crank. 1 5 is likely the date, but if assembled in 1977 maybe 12 5? The 2 maybe the number of the engine assembled that day. I hope that helps.

7T440E is a 1977 440, built in the Trenton plant with a cast crank. E means cast crank, T is Trenton. T is not Truck. All big blocks after 1973 came with a T on them.
1 5 is the date the motor was assembled. 2 means second shift. Motor was probably cast in 1976, 1 to 4 months before the assembly date. Look for a 10 5 76 or something like that on the side of the block.

Thanks that's what I needed. I'm in the process of rebuilding it, and have just completed the tear down. Wha do you think the factory compression on this motor was. It has 452 heads 208 and 174, flat top pistons and a very thin steel head gasket. It looks like it lacks maybe a 1/8 " at TDC of being even with the block.

I think the factory rated the late '70s 440 engines as having a compression ratio of 8.2. However, the actual compression ratio was probably 8.0 at best, maybe worse. I think the piston to deck measurement is about 0.150"
