Last saturday, my 318 '95 Ram 1500 quit on my after driving about 25 miles. It started running rough like it was starved for gas or something and eventually quit. I waited about 15 minutes, then it ran about a mile and quit again. It shakes violently when it does this. I took it to my mechanic yesterday, and he found two loose ground wires behind the bumper and replaced the distributor cap. He also checked fuel pressure, and that was fine. I drove it home today and it died again (luckily when I got home). Has anybody else had this happen to them? Please help me... I need my truck back...

I don't know much about the newer FI engines.
Did the computer store any codes? It sounds like the computer may be loosing the engine timming signal. Does this computer sense the distrubitor pickup signal? If it does you could check the air gap, if it is bad then I think the computer might store a error code? |

The service engine light never came on if that is what you mean. I will mention this to my mechanic and see if it makes sense to him (it doesn't to me, I'm used to my pre-computer engines) Thanks and anymore help would be greatly appreciated!

The computer can (and will) store trouble codes, and they may not make the check engine light come on.
What you need to do is the ignition "on-off-on-off-on" with the key (don't start the engine), wait a few seconds and the chack engine light will start flashing a two digit code. If enerything is OK with the computer you will get code "55" or five quick flashes, a pause and five more quick flashes. This "55" is the end of codes code, so if there is a problem code stored, it will flash the problem code(s) first. If you get a code other than "55" you need to look up the code in a service manual. |

From what you describe, I would nearly bet money you have a faulty fuel pump. This is a common problem, the pump gets hot and quits pumping. If there was something in the electronics causing the problem it would set a code.

My '97 left me sitting with a similar symptom. It was the fuel pump/fuel level assembly in the tank.
It was an expensive part but luckily still under warranty at 60K mi. |
