Default KB 408 stroker pistons??? What happened??

I'm FINALLY building the 408 stroker motor I've been wanting to build for quite some time. Ordered the KB 356 pistons. When you purchase them, they make it very clear that the quench pad area of the piston may need some milling. OK, no problem. So I'm mocking this thing up to see how much. I put the piston at TDC and much to my surprise the compression surface is sitting a full .100" below deck. These pistons also have a 23.5cc dish out of the box and will only get larger by milling the quench pad area. I'm using 66cc heads and the gasket is another 9cc, which according to my calculations brings me to an anemic 8.25 CR. Now KB says the compression on these guys is around 9.5 with 66cc heads. What's the deal here??? Has anyone else run into this? Is it normal or have I forgotton how to do math?? Any help appreciated.

Yeah, with a 9.600" deck height you should only be about .012" in the hole. KB lists the compression height as 1.465" on these pistons. I believe I would check that first and see what you get. They may have been mismachined, who knows.

Sure enough, the compression height is off by about .100". I guess you can't just take their word for it.

Thanks. I would've just assumed they were OK and probably ruined a good block by milling a tenth inch off the deck!

Wow!!! Some Monday pistons I guess. It looks like every time we buy parts we need to immediately measure and test the fit in case something is wrong. It seems almost every performance company is having quality control problems from what I'm seeing on the various Mopar boards. Good luck, hope you get it worked out OK.

They use a Black and Decker to drill the pins holes on Monday's.

I believe it. They might as well have sent me the bare casting and told me to machine it myself. I could get closer than .100" off at home with my Dremel and a belt sander.

I just got 1.364" CH on my KB356's which was from the center of the pin to the thin base "rim" around a good portion of the perimeter which is not the "plateau" or the "plateau base" both of which are higher. If that helps. EDIT The plateau was .084" above the raised base. MORE EDIT OMG! Ted I sure missed that, when I saw the 408/kb 356 reference it grabbed my attention as I am in the middle of one right now.
