Default Sleeper...

What do you think about sleepers? It`s nice to watch shiny cars in a show, but when the owners are afraid to use them..sad. Mopars are made for drivin`. I Made -73 4D Dart with 440(funmobile), and it should go under 13s. (after new fuel line and suregrip, not quite ready yet). But it has been fun already, teasing those daddyleasing BMW`s and suits in their Audi TT`s. The car is not a rustbucket yet it needs a new paint. I have only passenger side tailpipe showing(2,5"), drivers side behind rear bumber, wide Mopar-mudguards hiding tires. The guy I know has done this further, with 750 hp(dynoed) 440 4D Valiant, of course quite many know his car and leave it alone. But once in a while some challences him and gets rubberpieces raining on a hood "The shine won`t get you there"

If you mean the snow, it falls around christmas and melts in april. So I usually take my summercar out at the end of april and drive it to october/november. There is no polarbears roaming the streets of Helsinki. It has been +25-32 centigrade(Celsius?) over 3weeks here. Too hot for my car, 2" CPPA headers and no carpet. The floor is like frying pan in the cruising(tomorrow!).

Sleepers are fun. The only thing that might give my Chrysler away to some is the sound of the exhaust

I've got a 383 In my 77 Newport and the car looks and sounds like crap, but is one of the fastest cars in town. Its fun to act like my car is a busted hunk of junk, then blow away a little ricer when the light goes green.

I think sleepers are pretty cool . It is such a status symbol here in So. Cal to have a nice shiny ride, but when those guys square off for a race and either get spanked or bail out at the last minute because there is a chance their girlfriends will see them get whooped is satisfaction enough. My buddy has always had POS cars, but the motor was all buisness. Cammed Clevelands in 72 notchback rustangs with black primer paint jobs, 340 4speeds in '64 Barracudas with no interiors, or paint (hey, I got that motor!) 302 Maverick (ford guy) Anyway, all show-no go is about as cool as bolt on boobs (well...?) give me motor any day. C'mon, pro street looking minivans? You got to be kidding...

Sleepers rock.

15.7@85 mph, for the van, is quicker than a lot of street cars

4 doors, wagons, thats cool.

You expect to get your doors blown off by a challenger, not by diplomat, ect.

wow Sleepers

I like those old sleepers. You get some BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/Infinity smart guy pulls up along side you at the light, tries to jump ahead and cut you off because he's got a "fast" car and your "old junk" just can't possibly be faster than his magnificent import. I love the look on their faces when you blow their doors off and leave them sitting in their car wondering what the hell just happened!

When I get done with my 300 the wheels and slight rake may make some drivers think twice but with the stock sheet metal on I bet there's going to be LOTS of suprised import smart guys out there! Along with a few 5.0 Rustangs and Chebbies!!!

Default Question.....

If you have say,.... a '69 GTX with rusty quarters and bad paint but a stout 440 is that still a sleeper?

Anybody that knows beans about cars knows what these are capable of, do you think they'll assume you're slow because you're ugly?

Of course many of these youngsters in their little ricer cars don't know squat about old Mopar iron. If it isn't covered in stickers and loaded with plastic parts from APC they think it's slower than their rice disposals.

Gee, I guess I kinda answered my own question, huh?

Sleepers are fun.......the cops don't even look at you when you drive by them with a grandpa's 5th ave with hub caps and quiet dual exhaust, they may notice the back wheels stick out a little but they are snow/mud tires. Under the hood is a 400 with headers...lol. The car was only slow cause of the 9 1/4 with 2.73 gears, but could still chirp into 2nd. I scrapped the car cause a wrist pin seized and I didn't want to put another shortblock together.

hmmm ok now do ya'll consider something a sleeper if its dented and primered, with skinny tires and looks like it should be hauled off to the crusher, or a nice enough looking a-body bcuda with a stoker 496 under the hood with 273 emblems on the fenders?

I myself never mess with a primered car, ya never know what evil lurks beneath

Moral dilemma here guys:

Is it a sleeper if I've left the original 383 stickers on the front fenders of my faded, but totally stock looking 71 Satellite Sebring Plus, yet under the hood actually lies a well built 440+6?

I'm thinking this is kinda like that ol' rhetorical question of whether a tree falling in the forest makes a sound if there is no one there to hear it? (ie., it's a sleeper unless the other guy finds out!)

What do you think... ethical or not? Or should I even care what expression is on their face in my rearview mirror?

Big block is a Big block, no slouch in either size. Put a Super 6 sticker on it.

LOL

Yeah RIGHT JK.............with that max-wedge cam and exhaust system...... sleeper ??!! .......... and with those rear skinnies? .....3.00 60 foot times ??

ME thimks a sleeper has to have a stealth look, should have a stock looking rear tire that WORKS and should be quiet.

JUST my $000000.02 though !

John: That IS a thing of beauty! Only an ex max wedge crony like myself can really appreciate that. A '62 is SO ugly, only it's mother could love it but who cares? That car is a GEM!

kunkel, are they exhaust manifolds or homemade headers like i just seen in a mopar mag?

i had a 76 400 newport ran 14.9s and my best friend at the time dropped a 500cid into a 80 something caddy and that went 14.0s smokin the tires half way down the track. my 70 roadrunner and his 65 tunnel ram gto sat in the garages because the sleepers were more fun.

Question Question?

Does anyone remember the phrase "Super Start Dart" ? Darts were considered economy cars and low profromance. The idea of a sleeper can be a new car but what is expected to be slow. Mopar's not only had the engines but the suspensions to match. I once saw a 55 ford 4 door that could jerk the wheels and run like a banshee. I had a nova with a crappy paint job that would do it too! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sleepers are cool.

I think Johns car is definately a sleeper. If it pulled up in front of 7-11, you'd expect a 100 year old man to get out, or woman.

Of course there is no body meaner than the little old lady from pasadina( and her brand new shiny red super stock dodge)

Those are the original exhaust manifolds that came on "Ramcharger" engines.
My question: Is it an original Ramcharger or a clone? Also, is it the original 413? Which engine is it, the 410 or the 420 HP?

It is a clone; began life as a /6 three-on-the-tree grocery getter. The block is a 440 but the top end is pretty much correct. The rear tires are skinny 14's and, yes, you can blow them off at part throttle, no need to turn the steering wheel to change lanes.

Most folks don't realize that the '62 Max Wedges were only built in June and July of '62 so there never were many of them and few survive.
