I have the article somewhere

I have a stack of car mags about 6 feet tall. I remember It ran well till they ran a 250 hp shot of squeeze through it then the engine fragged. If I find it I will e-mail it to you

There wouldn't be much to doing that. Are you looking to just play or do you want to build a nitrous engine that will last for years?

Well if you just want to play-

Get a stock cast iron 4-bbl intake, a 650 carb and a 150 HP plate system. You can probably find all of it used for under $300.

Get the spring kit from Mopar Performance to recurve the distributor for full advance at 2000 RPM.

Set your total timing to whatever it needs to be to get the highest 1/4 mile MPH. (WITHOUT USING THE NITROUS!).

From there - the rule of thumb is to back off the total timing by 2 degrees for every 50 HP worth of Nitrous you use- If you are just using pump gas (93 Octane)

Let's say you get it dialed in at 34 degrees timing on the engine itself.

You want to throw in the 75 HP jets to try the Nitrous = set your timing back to 31 degrees total advance.

150 HP Nitrous shot = 29 degrees total advance.....

This is WAY oversimplified tuning advice, so use at your own risk. But those timing recommendations come from an HP book I bought on Nitrous installation and tuning.

I didn't even mention the carb jetting, because most likely, any jets you put in a 4bbl on a stock 318 are going to be too big...

Be VERY careful if you decide to play with anything larger than a 150 HP system. The Last thing you want is for your torque converter to explode at 5000 RPM.

It would be cool to just break the 13' with the RR and just a 318

I think they nicknamed that car the "Bottle Bomb Duster" in a later issue! Don't remember which mag it was, but it was a super-yucky bunch of metal bits and oil that was underneath the engine after it went south.

Default Found it!

The first half, anyway....it's in the February 1998 issue of Hot Rod. The second half of the article, I would assume, is in the March 1998 issue, which I haven't found (yet).

I will try to email it to you, sbuc72, let me know if it goes through.

All you need is a stock tq intake and a new thermoquad. New from Advance auto for around 189 and a spread bore plate system. There is also a nitrous timming control that retards timming as needed. you can run a safe 175 shot for a while. Main thing is the jets need to be right and a little rich. Make sure you have good plugs, and maybe even go a step colder in heat range. Say a n7yc champion should do it gapped at .040. Make sure you have some good headersand xpipe under the car too. Gas flow will go up with nitrous so you need a good exhaust system too.

Well, I tried to get it into my email but can't do it, sorry.

Try to find the issue at a library, our library has back issues of Hot Rod that go back several years. You might even be able to buy an old copy from the Hot Rod site.
