Question Cam Timing

I hear all this talk about Cam Timing from a lot of different people at the Drag Strip, so I would like to know if anyone can give me some constructive insight into the advantages, and or disadvantages, of installing a cam either "Advanced or Retarded" as opposed to setting it "Straight Up"...........

hello, if a given cam's powerband is 2300-6500 when installed properly [degreed in], advancing the cam 4* will drop the power range around 200-300 rpm. 2300-6500 now becomes 2100-6300
advancing the cam increases low- midrange power while giving up some top-end.
retarding the cam has the opposite effect. it moves power up the range.
advancing the cam also moves the intake valve closer to the piston.

this could create piston to valve clearance issues.
