Default 318 Build

Hey all. As you may have read I picked up another 318 for free. The build on this motor is pretty much anything goes. I'd like to get at least 400 horse out of it. I was looking pretty hard at the 400 hp build using the 302 heads, but personally I think I like the thought of the Magnum heads more. Open to any and all suggestions. Also, thoughts of a 390 stroker are running through my head. Thanks in advance.

Eric

You gotta want a 390 stroker because it is more expensive than a 340 - 360 to 400+ stroker.
The MoPar Muscle mag did a 400 HP build up with a single plane M-1 and a Comp Magnum cam rated @ 280* w/.480 lift. There use of magnum heads in the build also means the rockers are not a 1.5 but a 1.6 for more lift.
.480 turns into .512 Check coil bind and or guide clearance for problems on the Magnum head.

Biggrin

I am going to build a 390 for my 74. I already have the crank, and am waiting on the money for the pistons.
The reason I am, is becasue it will say "318" on the block, and I like the small bore.
Pistons are 1100$ though, for forged.

You may wanna look at this, for some ideas.

I found it awhile ago while looking for info for a "free" 318 I got too.

I guess "free" engines are like "free" kittens, huh?

I just got done looking at a couple of different engine builds and I'm pretty sure that I am going to go with the 400 hp with the 302 heads. I haven't tore down the motor completely yet, but I plan to this weekend. That should give me a better idea of whether or not I need to bore, and I can make my decisions from there. I will be using the stock 360 intake that I have for now, but would like anyones input as to later, and also what carb to use. Thanks.

Wink Free Engines like Free Kittens?

Yeah I would say so. They both can be gentle, playful, and docile. They both can be monsters that everyone in the neighborhood hates keeping them up late at night with all the noise. OR and this is the big one they both can grow into the biggest pain in the A$$ you and your wallet has ever seen!

As far as carbs go, I'd go with a TQ. That way you'll have some fuel economy, it'll bolt right to the intake you wanna use with no spacer, and you'll get the performance (when them big azz secondaries kick in ).

Just my .002.

And c318, I agree wholeheartedly.

Ok here's the scoop. I'm taking the motor down to the bare block this weekend, so that way I can measure how far the pistons are down in the hole, and also so I can take the block into the local machine shop and have it hot-tanked and inspected. I will know more after this weekend. I'll keep you all informed. Thanks again.

Alrighty finally got the motor tore down today. Measured the pistons down in the hole - .055". There is also a slight lip at the top of the cylinder, so I'm pretty sure that it's going to need bored. I am taking into the machine shop next weekend to have it hot tanked and have everything inspected. Since it is going to need bored I am really considering a stroker kit. My only question is how hard will it be to get 400 horse with a stroker kit? If possible I think it would be extremely badass to get 450 horse out of it. I was also thinking of using magnum heads, but would I just be better off with a 360 head with 2.02/1.60 valves, good porting and polishing, and then shaving them down? Again, all input is appreciated. Thanks again.

Check your runout again in the cylinders...the lip at the top is called a ridge, there is a ridge-reemer tool. That doesn't at all mean it needs bored from that indication. Just do your homework and make the right choice. Good luck and have fun with it. 318 is a good motor, to run or to start on.

This is a pirated page; http://moparsa2z.com/web/archive/eng...8mildbuild.htm , I think from the OE writer which you can see by clicking here for his site; http://www.geocities.com/alwest_83/index.html
Or click this for the page itself. http://www.geocities.com/alwest_83/318
Alot of people know of this site and offten copy it else where without cudos to whom it belongs to. It's worse when I find it claimed as there own masterminding of his build and it's nothing but a direct copy.
