Default v8's only , glasspack or flowmaster

i know that everyone is diffrent and this has been brought up b4, but i just wondering what everyone here thought.
this is just for v8 sound only
dont take flow or cost into account
and running only dual pipes, no cat converters

i know that a bigger pipe will change the sound so compair them as they were on the same size pipe (say 2 1/4'') and same vehicle/motor.

i myself like short glasspacks on a v8 (i thimk 6 or 4 cylenders should be quiet, unless a motorcycle or atv ) , id rather have straight pipes (loud pipes save lives ya know) but couldnt afford the tickets
i do like how the flowmasters sound when at idle , but i like it to talk to me if i stomp on it. but thats just me

anyway sond only , glasspack or flowmaster

edit: ps i do run straight pipes on my 1000 goldwing , best sounding 4cyl i ever heard

I had glass backs (Cherry Bomb) on my 360 Duster years ago, loved them. 'had them coming out the side like a T/A.

I prefer Imperial mufflers, when that carb or carburetors come open on a Mopar, it'll still be plenty loud!

I run FM 40 Series on my modded 360 dually, thru headers, 3" pipes, and 4" stacks at the back of the cab. Out of respect and at the request of my neighbors, I don't run it at night or early AM. It is LOUD. I had 'paks on it, but it didn;t give the rumble I liked. Anyone who thinks this truck sounds like a weak sister runs open header or top fuel. It is liveable with teh windows up, and ear plug worthy with them down. Just right for me. :-)PCRMike

I ran glass packs on both my 318's and 383's. Loved the sound.

Default I'm

I'm currently running dynomax bullet mufflers that are 18" long and exit before the tires. They are basically real short glasspacks. They are loud and they pop alot. And I mean alot, they are fun going into tunnels and holding it in a lower gear to get it to pop but I'm done with them. They would go perfect on a old school lowrider or rat rod. I miss the deep rumble, but I got a set of the edelbrock pro-flows that edelbrock has on clearance for x-mas. Flows sound real tinny in some cars. Especially ones that are a big box, like a van or wagon.

hey thanks for the replys everybody. i like hearing what everyone's opinion is.

i grew up with glasspacks, maybe thats why i like them. im going to have a set of pipes run on my truck soon , it has headders on it and 2 1/4'' pipes and had flowmasters but no tailpipes, today i just got curious to see how loud it would be with straight pipes so i took the flowmasters off, it sounds good, and not really as loud as i thought it would be, but it starts comming to life at around 3300 - 4000rpm lol.
im planning to get some 2 1/2'' reducers and run 2 1/2'' pipes and i found some glasspacks thats 14'' overall , like 9'' baffle in it im going to order probably today, and i am going to put some 3 1/2'' stainless tips out the back.

my dad has got a 67 d100 with a 318 and stock manifolds with 40 series fm's and it has a good smooth sound , sounds good, just not got that glasspack sound i like thogh.

hope everyone has a good day

The thing is that glass packs don't flow very well and most open systems just short of top end race cars loose power with the open pipes. Sounds like you need to get a whole new system to me. Using a bunch of reducers restricts the flow and causes you to loose power as well. A proper exhguast system can give you some big gains if done properly.

If your putting this on the 318 you listed in your sig line, just install 2 1/4 pipes back to an X pipe and then install some flowmasters. You'll see a gain in power with that set up. Go with a bigger pipe size and you'll loose some of your bottom end. The glass packs will cause you some lose too, but use what ever you want.

I have run them both having been driving hot rods for over 30 years. By far I think that flowmaster give a better sound and will out last glass packs.

Hey but that is just me.

Dynomax super turbo's sound good. Just as a side note though, sound also depends on where the muffler is located. Two identicle vehicles, 1 with the mufflers up close and one with them out back will sound different,

Default Glasspacks for me

Reason is a 60's or 70's Rod sounds like it used to back when. Money is also a factor for some of us.

I have done the "garden hose up the glasspack" thing for years, I love them. Of course, I've never owned a big block either, hard to say what I'll do when I get that 383 in my Plymouth LOL.

Glasspacks sound pretty cool, but Flowmaster is the sound I like, the original 40 series, small block or big block they have the sound of raw power.... my preference

On my 383 Roadrunner, had flowmasters, switched to glasspacks, and a day later put the flowmasters back on. They sound more open to me.

If I had to choose between the two for sound, i'd go with glasspacks - Flowmasters sound 'hollow' and 'tinny'. Personally, I'd take Magnaflows anyday over anything else!

Ive got a FM delta 40, single in/double out on my 360 Durango(with a cat) I am very pleased with the sound and its far from "tinny" On the other hand, Ive seen a few late model v8 Ford pick ups with flowmasters and think they sound terrible. just my .02

I am running Hedman long tube headers on my warm 360, with 3" pipes, true dual, run to behind the cab with a set of 4" driveeshaft tube stacks space fit (water drainage) to the 3" pipes. I ran with 'packs at first, and changed to FM 40 series. The packs were snarly and mean, but the FM's sound on this rig makes alllllll the windows shake nearby. I don't drive it at night or early morning for my neighbors' sake. I don't hear junior's boombox in the ricer behind me at a light. :-) PCRMike
