82 Reliant Station Wagon with a stick, scrap or keep?
I've got this 82 Plymouth Reliant wagon I got from a friend. I got it dirt cheap, it belonged to a friend of his who tore the transaxle out of it trying to do burn outs with it in a bar parking lot. You can basically flop the transaxle into any gear, clutch in or out and nothing happens. Outside of the case is ok, but who knows what damage lurks inside. I don't know if it's a 4 speed or 5 speed. Back hatch is trashed as well. I'm debating, should I part it out or fix it and keep it? I like the fact that it has a floor shift, but it's pretty beat and neglected, and the bottom of the rear quarters are rusted out as well as general surface rust and dings, though nothing large. Motor ran ok except for the typical 2.2 pecking lifter noise, no smoke, oil or otherwise.
It's only the 2nd of these I've seen with a stick and the other one was a 4 door. I know it'll never be that much, but it is unusual. Whadya all think, unusual enough to keep or part it out and wave good bye? |

Dude the only reason you have only seen two is cause they were junk! If the thing was a turbo, but its not. I owned a few k cars in the day,(turismo-duster,reliant,etc) and they ran great got me every place i pointed them but that thing is too old and too far gone, in 15 years nobodys gonna drool over a 5spd wagon that wasent cool to begin with.

Yeah, and I heard the same thing said about Valiants, Satellites and Belvederes too. As for calling them junk, all I know is my 86 Reliant went for well over 400K miles, I'm sure this one would do just fine if I fixed where it was abused.
I'm not talking about a rotisserie restoration, just grabbing some of the cheap parts that are easily available, and patching it back together. If it was an automatic, I'd say heck with it and find a nicer one, but there are no nicer ones as far I've been able to find, wagon, 4 door or coupe equipped like this. |

Well, I've got a few in front of it on the project list including my daughter's 60 Chrysler and my Roadrunner. I was hoping to get at least an idea how unusual it is to have one of these with a stick. I just don't want to scrap out a car then find I shouldn't have done that later on. I remember too many horror stories of cars being parted out in the 80s that should never have been.

That sounds like fun. I've got an 88 Caravan cargo van that I've been thinking about doing this to.
I'd keep the wagon. |

The thing is, if I wanted a pro street Reliant wagon, there's plenty that came originally with automatics to cut up out there, though not near as many as you'd think. Luckily for it's sake, there's a couple of other parts cars I need to toss before I'd get down to it anyway. And by the way, mine is a 4 speed, they didn't get a 5 speed till 83. Just found this. http://www.allpar.com/eek/k/kron.html

Depends on condition. I'd throw a tarp over it and set it on blocks until it worth the dollars needed to restore it, or until I had all the bits and peices needed to restore it (depending on your mind set. Presently there is no market, but if the idiots in DC have their way, and gas prices become steep again, a frugal gas sipper with a big trunk will be just the thing.
You might even be able to turn it over for a profit if you cared to sell it. |

I doubt it'll ever be worth much, maybe not even as much as an equivalent 4 speed slant six Dart or Valiant. I mainly like it because it's such an odd duck.

hey race the thing I think a turbo 2.2 or 2.5 would be neat or buid a 2.2 with a nice cam and some webers there was a superchager at time for the 2.2 that ran a carb intake. BTW mydad years ago had an 82 2.2 charger that one had a 4spped in it 83 I beleave the 5speeds were in the front wheel cars. Here are a list of 5 speeds tags to see what u have
a525 a520 a555 thats what i know off the top of my head these are 5speed |

That verifies my suspicions that it was a 4 speed, though right now you can swing the shifter in all directions like a butter churn. I may attempt an update to 5 speed once I get after it. I'm hoping that the swap will be a simple replacement, though I'm not too sure what I'll get into with the CV- joints, though if I can get away from the early axles with clips in the differential, that'd be a plus.

As of right now, your poll is tied, 3 to 3. I am refraining to vote because mine would be the swing vote and stay that way until someone voted the other way.
Therefore, I will not declare sides at this time. Anybody seen my broom and dustpan? |

I know I'm being stubborn but....

But really those things are starting to slowly disappear... Wish Ma Mopar could find their modern day K car and use it to make another rapid come back.... Oh well. |

Here what you can do. Grab the entire front suspension, motor and transaxle from another k-car. put it in the back, a little fab work, vola, 4 wheel drive, and v8 power, once you get the bugs worked out, swap the 2.2 for a pair of v6's, it will be fun.
