One gallon of ethy has about 80% of the energy a gallon of gas has so you burn more fuel trying to go the same distance and speed unless the engine is super or turbo charged which makes up for the less energy. In theory anyway, I would love to see this test done.

Out here, on the farm, we only burn dyed gasoline, and dyed diesel. I don't think i have even seen a station that sells anything but pure gasoline. But then again, Alberta is a mega power in the oil busisness. The last thing it would want to do was get corn from the east and south and mix it with their gas.

I also live in western Illinois and we grow a lot of corn in this part of the world. Sure would be nice to see farmers making some money, though I would prefer the government not subsidize the H out of them. My hometown is currently building a new ethanol plant.
Actually a bushel of corn was selling for about $2.20 a bushel in the 1930s and that was a common price during the last twenty years (an longer) for corn. So, heck yes I would like to see farmers make some money off of their crops. Besides, it beats the heck out of sending our gas money to Saudi Arabia or some other Mideast country. After seven years with our current president and his consortium of oil loving boys, I would like to see those people eat some sand and the little guy do well! My history with ethanol began in the late 70s when I started buying it when I was attending Western IL Univ. It didn't hurt my mid-70s beater Mopars I was driving at the time-318 Scamp and 225 Valiant sedan. That was a 10% ethanol blend. I have bought a lot of blended ethanol gas since then and have never noticed a problem with it eating fuel lines or plastic parts. Some of my vehicles were new and I have had some with high miles on them. When I had company cars (U.S. brands other than Mopar), I never had problems with running 10% blends in them either. Sorry, I don't have any experience with E85. My '02 T&C van will burn it and I might try it in it, if it were easier to find. Right now it's not easy to find and the few stations that sell it in my area are not pricing it competitively with other nolead gas. |
