Default Ever owned a car or truck for 10 years or longer?

I've owned a variety of vehicles over the years, but never managed to keep any of them for any length of time until now. This coming February 11 2006, I will have owned my 1996 Plymouth Breeze for a decade. I was always rough on my vehicles and usually when I got thru with them, it was a lot more common for me to part them out because there were worthless for trade in and too tore up to sell at enough to make it worth it.
Longest I kept a vehicle before the Breeze was my father's old 83 Dodge van which I kept from 88 to 94 for a grand total of 6 years.
So whats the longest you've kept a vehicle?
Also, while not technically accurate for this poll, if you've got a car that's been in the family for a long time and been passed thru several hands, it'd also be interesting to hear about your "heirloom" as well.

I never have owned them for very long, they always seem to be dead or wrecked when i get rid of them. I tend to buy used cars and drive them into the ground. I put too many miles on cars to have them last 10 years. My Intrepid that I have now is my longest running one though, bought it in 99 and shes taken a licking, but keeps on ticking. You wouldnt know it from looking at it or driving it that it has almost 150,000 miles on it.

Lets see, right now the record for us is Dad's '62 Fury, he got it "new" and it was hauled off for scrap in '85, then theres our '76 D100 that was totaled in '80 but it sat in the garage till late '03 in pieces then scraped, then our Chevy Beauvilles The '78 we had till '87 when we traded it on a new yet nearly identicle '87 Beauville which had an minor and quickly extiguished electrical fire in late '04 and has been sitting as on site storage since then and will be scraped when we finally get ready to move, then there was the '70 CHarger R/T (440 Six Pack/ 4-speed/ Super Track Pack!) car that was totaled in '76 and scraped (after all the good stuff was striped and sold) in the early 80's, them my Lebaron GTS whgich I bought in '95 and scraped (after being parked for 6 months) in early '04, then Dad's '88 CHerokee that was purchased on Halloween '92 and totaled Nov '97 (Icey bridge a few other cars met their makers that day and the first officer on the scene landed on his rear as soon as he stepped out of his squad car too ), I had my SHadow from summer '99 through Nov '03, I gave it to the president of the local SDAC club who stuck a new engine in it and drove a while then sold it to somebody who was going to fix it up, I also had a '94 Grand Cherokee Larado the I totaled after 6 months and 2 wrecks (only one of which was my fault, unless you listen to the drunk that hit me in the first wreck ), and Dad's Pontiac 6000LE that we had from '90 or '91 through '92. As for the currently operative vehicles Dad has had the '90 CHerokee that has replaced the '88 since Dec '97 and currently had 279k on it, my sister had a 92 Briarwood that she bought in the summer of '01, and then theres my '98 Cherokee Limited that I bought in summer of '03 (right after joining this forum infact!)

Well the longest I have owned a car is 10 years now. I didn't buy the car however. The car is a 1970 Lincoln Mark III that my father left to me when he passed away. I restored the car back to original specs (it had the wrong engine and interior) and I have only driven it a handful of times since the restoration. I will pass it on to my son as a family legacy.
As far as cars I have bought myself, they are all Mopars. The longest would be my 73 Charger which is coming up on 5 years. Prior to that it was my 63 Custom 880 which I had 4 years and drove as my regular vehicle every damn day. Before that was my brand new 1979 Dodge Aspen that I bought as a Chrysler Tent sale in 79. I traded my drop dead gorgeous 340 1970 Cuda gran coup (paid a whopping 1100.00 for it and they gave me 900.00 as a trade in). I kept the Aspen for three years. Inbetween there have been dozens of winter beaters, parts cars, weekend racers, K cars, mini vans, pickup trucks, and huge land yachts. All were never over a year or two. At times I could have four or five driveable cars at once. Back then insurance was 600 or 700 a year for two cars. Today I pay 3K for three cars. How life has changed.

Default I wish !!!!!!!!!!

I cheated when I voted. Owned? I bought a 56 Chevy in 69. I still have the title somewhere. But in 73 I drove it to Detriot. Need any more explination? It was stolen. Officially I still own it. And truthfully, I would never have sold it unless some fool had offered me 3 times what I it was worth. I had toooooooooooo much fun with it. 7 engines, 13 transmissions and 3 rear ends. I had it set up where I could take the 4 bolts off the hood and set it aside and then 5 bolts to lift the entire front off. I worked on it so much, I had to do something.

Young and dumb.

But on the good side,,,,,,,,,,, I never could beat those damn Plymouths and Dodges at the strip and that is why I'm where I am today.

I bought my 70 w100 in 94, and I still own it, I bought my 69 Valiant in 97, and I still own it, I bought my 71 D200 in 97 too, and I too still own it. Bought my 95 Ram in 98 and I still own it. My coronet in 01 and I still own it, I bought a Honda XR70 in 01 too and of course I still own that.

I have had many a vehicle in between all of these, like a 78 Honda civic, 69 Cadillac, 87 GTA trans am, 86 Iroc camaro A whole wrecking yard of 61 -71 dodge trucks, a 95 Chev Berreta, a 97 Honda accord and now an 05 Civic Si.

I will proabably be buried with the firts paragraph of cars, the rest will be gone or are gone already!

10 yrs? let's see............................................... uhhh....Nope!

Closest I've come was a bought new '94 Ford (sorry!) F-150. Had 250K miles when I got hit head-on by a lady not paying attention in 2003.
"Look Ma... No Hands!" Too bad 'cause that truck was mint, ran excellent.

In my 20s' I must have fallen and hit my head because I started collecting big "Intermediate" sleds. Just fell in love with anything between '59 - '64 didn't care who made it. If it's got wings it's for me. If it's a mopar with wings, well that's even better!

No clue how this happened by the way since I wasn't born 'till '66 but they started multiplying in my parents' yard like rabbitts! Mom never understood why I couldn't be like a normal college kid and just bring dirty laundry when I came home?

Anyway, back then people would practically throw these style cars at me. They couldn't get them out of their yards fast enough. (mainly chevy Impalas)It was easy, the cars were complete but didn't run so I could get them cheap ( $500-$800 or so)

Always had big dreams of keeping each one forever but it never worked out. Would get them running and take them to cruise nights and someone old timer would say "Hey kid... I had one of those! How much you want for it?"
"A couple of hot dogs, a coke, a date with your daughter, and it's yours!"

Needless to say, since the priorities of youth are far removed from common sense, none of those cars lasted more than 2 or 3yrs in my hands. If I knew then how much I would miss the fun those cars gave me, (and how much grief women would cause me) I'd probably still own most of them and be single! Yikes...!

Only car I've had for more than 10 years is a circle track stock car chassis. We build it and ran it for 1/2 season. driver moved up a class, I bought the car then the track changed the rules and made that chassis style illegal. that was 1992. been sitting in my garage ever since. Does that count?

All is not lost however. I recently found a complete and rock solid C- body 65 Sport Fury. This one I plan to keep for many years when it's done.

I am approaching 9 years with my truck, April 15th. I don't think age is as much of an issue, barring rust and mice, as miles driven.

I have never driven any vehicle as far as my truck, nor have I hung on to one for this long. The high mileage I racked up during the first 5 or 6 years took it out of the resale market. Once you get 100K on the clock, people walk away. Hit 200K and they run.

So, in my case, I am hoping to get 10 years out of my timing chain........................nuckanuckanuckanucka. ............!

I owned a 1983 Camry for 12 1/2 years and loved it every minute. I sold it to buy my first '94 Dakota. My Mom has the red CC V-6 now, with about 43K miles on it. She absolutely loves it, and won't part with it for anything. It's easier for her and my Dad to get in and out of than a car. My parents(and I bought it from them, then sold it back) owned a 1963 ChevyII Nova for 16 years and 135K miles or so. 194 CID straight six and a PowerGlide and a HD locking rear axle(NOT a Posi-Trac). With non-powered drum brakes sourced from a full sized, I learned "incepient braking" well because pushing the pedal was just like stepping on the floorboard...no feed-back at all! Manual steering meant parrlell parking was a chore. About every 5 years we put a new 1 bbl Rochester carb on it. Until we discovered Michielin radials we almost wore the 13" rims out changing to new tires! The most we ever got out of a set of bias-plys was 22K and they had cord showing! The factory U.S. Royal's (remember those?)lasted 6,000 miles.

I've had/have a couple cars for more than 25 years.
I have my 62 Valiant, well actually I've only owned it for about 22 years.
And my 65 Valiant, which technically I don't own anymore because I
gave it to my brother-inlaw a couple years ago to restore.
He is just about done with the 65 Valiant, back to stock 273 HiPo 4 spd.
Its looking really good. He has offered it back to me if I want it.
Still thinking about it, ( he seems to prefer his 67 Mustang, no accounting
for taste )

I bought my '72 Challenger in '89, other than that I've never kept a car more than 5 years. If I keep the D200 for another 8 months, it will move into 2nd place as the longest-held vehicle I've ever owned. However, with as much time and money as I'm sinking into the '74 Challenger (bought in Dec. 2002) I think I'll be keeping it for a long time too. Well, unless the guy who keeps putting notes under my wiper that he wants to buy it gets real about how much he's willing to pay!

I've owned my Duster for 15 years, and only drove it once. Someday, it'll be back together so I can drive it again.

I haven't even been able to drive for 10 years...lol. My longest was my '89 5.0 mustang LX. Had it for a bit over 3 years. Oh, do i ever miss that car. Sorry for that last remark mopar loving/ford hating people, but it was really nice and fast. And i got a lot of attention in it....Good attention. I mean, driving a chick magnet had its upsides.

Your 88 brought back memories.
Our first Land Rover was also Right hand drive. Bet I can still shift better left handed. Double de-clutching. Second gas tank replaced the toolbox and a small toolbox was under the middle seat.
Took the tops off the doors, rolled up the sides and..worked. Was in Ethiopia then.
The crossmember under the bell housing was flattened, all the paint worn off the undercarriage by driving through Elephant grass.
Thanks for the memories.

Biggrin to many to list

The old man gave me his 40 dodge pickup when I was 10.
I think he was trying to kill me! I started dragging home
every old mopar I could find for free of course, not much
money at 10 years old. I think that was 40 years since I
was 10, anyway I still got mopars from 1934 to 2003, I"m
still collecting and racin dirt cars. [ MOPARS FOR EVER ]
