Engine dies when hot

I drove my 74 Duster 360 about 3 miles last night and it quit running and would not start, this morning I went out and it fired right up. I have an electric fuel pump and could see that it was getting fuel. When I checked the spark it seemed very weak. I have a MSD box with a stock coil and distributor. Any ideas what might be wrong and why it would start after sitting ?

Sounds like a bad coil. If there is a break in the internal wiring of the coil that heats up it may cause that break to expaind or move apart, there by killing the current flow through the coil. A way to test this is to heat the coil up and messure the Ohms on the coil(with the car off!). Or just go to auto zone and buy one for 15 bucks and drive it around for awhile. That would be my first guess.

I agree. If you are getting good fuel, then the coil is shot. You mentioned the weak spark and that pretty much well confirms a bad coil.

Thanks, I will get a coil tomorrow. Any suggestions on which one to buy ?

if you are running the msd box why not get an msd coil. It doesnt realy matter but it would look cooler.

The MSD box fires 5 sparks at each plug at 3000 RPM and lower, this will definatly over heat your STOCK coil and give you a coil melt down....go grab a MSD Blaster 2 and end your problems...you should get that distributor replaced with a MSD or a least a MP with a recurve done on it.

Good Luck and Happy Motoring.......

I recently had a similar problem that turned out to be a failing reluctor pickup coil in the distributor. It would stop working when it got hot.
If the ignition coil doesn't do it for you you might check out this other thing.
