What Main Bearings Manufacturer and part # (or Series) would you recommend for a 440 capable of 500 to 600 HP?
I am currently running the Federal Mogul Drag Racing type 3/4 groove bearings. I am not pleased these bearings and would like to hear about other Main Bearing types. |
I'm using the Clevite bearings and have had no problems. The Federal Moguls may be made by Clevite,I'm not sure.

Good question. I am selecting my bearings right now and would like to hear opinions.
What didn't you like with ones you had? ------------------ 440 Jim E-Body Fish |
What I don't like about the Federal Mogul bearings is that they show wear marks on them that are consistent with out of round bearings. Concentricity is the term I'm looking for, I believe.
I am running around .003" bearing clearance (.010" undersize) and the slightest imperfection in roundness of the bearing can be the difference between good oil pressure to low oil pressure. I raced the motor for 5 years prior to rebuilding it this year. For the life of me I don't recall exactly which bearing I ran before. I am certain it was Tri-metal, but that is all I am certain of. The old bearings showed signs of detonation (gone to racing gas now), but never affected the oil pressure. The crank look great and the journals held the same original measurment. The motor held pressure for about 4 to 5 weeks before the dramatic oil pressure loss. |
I haven't noticed that with the Clevites.I understand that the best bearings as far as being true are Vandervells and the Vandy's are the same as Childs & Albert.(Vandervell makes them for C&A)I will say this for some reason when I use a TRW cam bearing, that comes out of a TRW box,The last cam bearing in the back of the block always fits tight and I have to use a bearing knife to get the cam in.

IM using the Michigan 77 (Clevite) #MS877P. Bought them from Muscle Motors. They are a full groove bearing. For the 500 to 600 hp would work perfectly fine.

Have to agree about the Michigan ( Clevite 77 ) bearings. Have never had a problem with them.Just make sure machine work is correct & check clearances.

I have used both bearings but will never use the federal moguls again. I have never had a problem with my Clevite (Michigan) 77 bearings. I had a set of Federal Mogules that wore out a crank in less than 8 weeks. This was just after resizing all the rods and having a crank reground and the block line honed. Number seven rod bearing went out. The block was hot tanked and all the clearances spec'ed nothing was out. I caught it early and think the crank will be ok.

My experiences with Clevite bearings: after 1 season in my 340 they were flaking. ( racing engine shifting at 7500) Then I switched to Vandervel on advice of my engine builder, have run same bearings for 6 seasons and they look as good as the day I installed them. I have heard the 3/4 groove bearings are the way to go in big blocks, I don't know if Vandervel makes any but if they do I would use them. Just my opinion. AJ

I had the same flaking problem a couple of years ago both in the mains and the con rods. The bearings were Clevite 77 and the rpm limit 7800 in a 4.15" stroke RB. I replaced them with new ones and since I tamed the engine for street use, I haven't gone much over 7000 after that. No problems after three years of use.

Here is some info for the record...
I looked at a package of MP main bearings for a RB, P4286549 (0.010 undersize). The bearings are marked Clevite 77, and the thrust is MB-2495P, the others are MB-2219P. These are full groove, with a big oil hole (oval). Does anyone have the numbers from the Clevite set MS-877P? Are these the same?? ------------------ 440 Jim E-Body Fish |
