Flathead rebuild suggestions

Any suggestions for a rebuild on a 230 flathead? I have not rebuilt one before, although I have done some V-8's. I know to be sure to replace the water distribution tube, balance the bottom end, and have heard the tricks about using small block generic motors head bolts to replace the stockers. I have heard that the valves from a generic motors will replace the 218 valves for half the price, but will they work in a 230? This is for my old 57 that I am too emotionally attatched to and I don't want to put my 340 or 440 into it.

I am a good ways off from being able to afford to rebuild it, but want all the advice I can get before I pull the plug on cruising in her. This car has been in my family since new, and the motor has never been rebuilt, so I want to do it right the first time.

Are you going for a full rebuild? I've seen a few of each. If you are going for a full rebuild make sure to get the block boiled real well after boring it .030. Most of these need that much to clean the cylinder walls up. As far as head bolts I have heard that SBC ones will fit, but I have always reused the old ones. Also the vavles can probably just be ground instead of replaced.

Yes, I am going for a full rebuild. I plan to replace the entire valvetrain. I just repainted the car, so I don't want to pull the motor any more than I have to. So while it is out, I am going to give it a full rebuild.

Check the site www.p15-d24.com which deals with 1946-48 Plymouths and Dodges
The guy that runs it is in the process of building a 230.
I'm sure you could get a lot of info.
Good luck

Make sure to replace the valve seats with seats that will allow you to burn unleaded fuel! (stainless steel?)

If your're going for performance, consider a cam regrind. Nothin' sounds better than twice pipes on a Mopar flat six!

Mopar flathead 6's had hardened valve seats from the factory. No need to replace. However the diaphram in the fuel pump will not like the unleaded too much.
