Coolant leak

My 2001 w/ 160K miles is losing coolant and I can't figure out where it's going. I don't see any obvious signs of leaking but the car has run hotter than normal twice in the last month and each time the coolant recovery tank was dry and I was able to add about a half gallon at the radiator cap. I hate to just start swapping out parts...any ideas?

You can run a cheap pressure test by running it until it's warmed up. Then let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Pressure and temp increase for a while after shut-off. So it's a good time to look for leaks. Check the trans fluid, if automatic, for coolant, which could indicate leakage at the trans cooler in the radiator. Check the oil at the dip stick and oil filler cap for milk shake appearance, which could indicate blown head gasket and/or cracked block. Check the exhaust for steam, again head gasket, block.

Thanks Chirorod, I'll give that a try.

Water pump ever been changed? I believe it is driven by the timing belt on those.

Hey LD, honestly, I don't remember changing it but the whole engine compartment (at least what I can see of it) looks bone dry and it's not making any unusual sound. Still, with 160K it wouldn't surprise me.
