318 performance tips

First off why install a search engine for for a mopar board that you can't search by engine size?

Next what can I do to my '86 318 to improve towing performance?

Some tricks depend on whether or not you have to do emissions testing in PA. Do you already have a 4bbl setup (thermoquad) on that one? If not, I would get a 4bbl carb and intake, next onto dual exhaust (big improvement) and then to the cam and converter. Alot of it will depend on the vehicle weight and the weight of the object being towed. Any chance for more specifics?

As in Indiana (I'm a former Hoosier) there is no emmision testing here. This is for an 86 Gran fury, unless I can find a police car linkage I am stuck with a 2 barrel. The holley 500cfm high performance 2 barrel looks good. There is so much emmission stuff on this car that I get confused just looking at the engine compartment. Dual exhaust is really out of the question for this car because of the gas tank. I was thinking of starting with a mopar performance distributor kit first then going to the holley carb.

I have a 86 Ramcharger and what I did was install a stock replacement 340 cam and springs,Edelbrock Performer intake, and a 600cfm Holley.I also used a true dual exhaust with 2.5" pipes and Hemi mufflers.Added Mopar electronic ignition and I get 16.25 mpg at 75 mph,and 13.0 towing a 5500# car and trailer.

I think there is something wrong with the 80's 318 in stock form, and I think it is more than just changing to a 4 barrel.

I had a 70 Bellvidere with a 318 2 barrel that was fast and powerful. There is alot on this '86 318 that I don't recognize.
I am tempted to try one of holley's performance 2barrel carbs and the mopar electronic ignition kit that way I can keep the stock manifold (don't want to loose AC.)

I can't tell if mine has 302 heads (hi swirl) but I've been told it may aloing with a roller cam.

318 tips

if you want a more powerful 318, go get a 67 to 71 318 truck engine(not a pickup) .From memory i think this engine puts out 230 hp on a two barrel. if you add 202's, 4 bbl., and a six pak cam , good manifolds and dual exhaust,290 hp is attainable. BUT, the best news is that it has the 340 steel crank. WHO KNEW THAT???????????
The 80's 318 have been pulled down on their knees (low comp. a garbage lean burn ignition, etc, etc.
Just my 2 cents worth

I have an edlebrock and holley 4bbl and have no problem with the A/C. All of this on my 86 Power Ram 318.

For dual exhaust you could always turn the pipes down just before the axle.

I agree any 318 with a swirl port head, or a 340/360 head will run very well. I have run 318's with both 1.88 and 2.02 valves and they run good both ways. It is also easier to get 4 bbl manifolds for the larger port 340/360 heads than the 318/273 head.

The first thing that you should do is a dual exhaust system with an H-pipe if possible. The single exhaust on the 318's really choke them. Then the four barrel will really give you the maximum benifit. I have run them on a couple of different engine simulator programs and the single exhaust needs to go.

hey,my vote is a 4 bbl, lose the stock ignition(read mp elec kit) decent manifold and if you really want to get into a tow cam...maybe something like one of the edelbrock packages-try 38/40 total timing with premium fuel only(with advance hooked up)checked at 3000 rpm-should have enuff cookies to ruffle 5.0 owners set up like this:D :D :D
