What do neutral safety switches do, where they go, were to buy, and do cars already have them? thanks

they are as implied by the name, they stop you from starting the car in gear, to avoid accidents. on autos, generally mounted on the steering column, sometimes in/on the tranny itself, on the later models in the tranny.
on standards, they are incorporated into the clutch system, to prevent you starting the car, again, in gear.

The nuetral safety switch on a 727 or 904 serves two purposes. It is a thread in plug with three wires connected to it that threads into the tranny on the left hand side (driver). Basically it provides the ground to kick the starter over when the car is in park or neutral to prevent the car from jumping AND it activates the reverse lights when the car is put into reverse. Any local NAPA or bumper to bumper will have them...they are cheap. They look kind of like a big spark plug with 3 prongs on the end instead or an electrode and the end that threads in has a flat piece with what looks like a BB mounted in the middle. Be carefull when you reinstall! Don't torque the crap out of it because it can actually push the sensor two far in and then it will not work well. i went through two until I found that out. The shop manual has a blurb about how to properly test and install one.

If one is going bad the car will not turn over when the key is turned. It will just sit there. It is a nerve wracking thing until you replace the switch.

Just a heads up - if you are replacing one in a 727 or 904 have a pan ready to catch 3-4 qts of oil in a hurry.:eek:

All rear wheel drive Mopars with an automatic trans have the NSS threaded into the drivers side of the transmission case.
Below is a pic of the various style switches, the two on the left are the single wire type used prior to '69; they are hard to find. The two on the right are the three-prong type with the backup light switch incorporated in them; they are fairly easy to find.

Thanks John, that is exactly what i have been talking about. Since his call sign was 74 swinger I figured he was running one of post 69 units like mine. The one on the bee is the second from the right shown.
