how to id an automatic transmission

Hey Guys,

Need help in decoding the following casting numbers on a mopar automatic.

The above drawing indicates 12 boxes cast in between the above casting numbers.

The only other casting numbers that I can find are on the tailshaft housing and are as follows.

09104
4 This is the way the numbers are cast.
3681191

I have been told that this is a 1978 727, however I need to know for sure.

I can find no stamped numbers anywhere on this unit.

Thanks for your help.

Larry

The first set of numbers above are on the drivers side and the other set on the passenger side.

904 pan is square with a corner cut, 727 is the same with a small addition opposite the cut corner. The casting numbers wont tell you squat, its the stamped numbers on the driver side pan rail thatll tell you where it came from, what it was in and when it was made. use a yellow crayon to highlight the stamping.

Welcome to the board Larry.

73 means the casting was made in 1973, some or all of the 12 cast boxes following the 73 should have raised dots in them, the number of boxes with raised dots denotes the month of the casting; for example, if 3 boxes have dots the casting was made in March '73. If 12 boxes have dots the casting was made in December '73 and would actually be used on a '74 model. No way could it be a '78. In reality, 3410XXX numbers would coincide with a '70 casting, 3681XXX would be correect for a '74.

The raised casting numbers are of little value in identifying the trans, as pistha said the stamped numbers in the drivers side pan rail and on the raised boss on the passenger side bellhousing will tell all about the trans and its origins.

Larry the 3681053 in my interchange manual shows to be a A727 used in 72-73 Charger, Coronet, Fury, Monaco, Polara, and Satellite with 318 or 360 engine with heavy duty trailer package.

Torqueflite A-727 Trans handbook

This is the book to have. tells you everything about the Torqueflite A-727.
From HP books by Carl H. Munroe. It's 234 pages with tons of info on everything from stock
to performance to an all out race transmission.
Think you know a lot about the 727? This book will teach you
a lot more.
I bought mine from Amazon.com for under $15 to the door.
www.amazon.com do an advanced search on the author Carl Munroe.
It will take you right to the book.

4239 following the part number is the build date March 6, 1973.

Here is a pic of the raised boss on the bellhousing, the partial VIN will be stamped there.
