Here's a debate going on right now about what fluid to use or not.

The general conses is Dextron 2 and Type F for racing applications. But you decide after you read all this gunk. Back and forth Back and forth. . . .

If all things are stock (stock size converter and non deep pan then I'd say a maximum of about 9 quarts. There is generally some in the converter (even fresh rebuilts) so you may only need 8. 8.5 sounds reasonable though.

As for the fluid to use I use and recommend Amsoil synthetic. I use it in the race 904 and my tow vehicles A-618 or 48RH what ever you want to call it. The Amsoil will last a season in a transbrake equipped race car without a cooler where the other mineral fluid lasts for about 15 passes at best before it's toast. As a bonus the Amsoil will also provide an increase of about 200 RPM's in stall speed.

Sorry, I forgot that part. The FSM says DEXRON. There might be better fluids out these days, but after I rebuilt my 904, I put in DEXRON II, and it's been just fine. Do you have an owner's manual for your car? If not, you can find them on eBay pretty cheap; that's how I got mine, along with the factory Chassis and Body Service Manuals.

Type F is for antique fords. Even ford guys don't use it any more.

I've run dextron and type F in shift kitted torque flites, and found they shift virtually the same.

You will find that you probably can't by dextron 2 anymore. Dextron 3 is you best bet. I run it in my 11 second car, so I'm sure it will be fine for a street strip cruiser.

The newer fluids for newer transmission (ie mercon 5, chryler type whatever...) are better fluids, and could be used, but won't see much of a benefit in a 30 year old transmission.

66 FSM states 16 pints/18.5 pints for the 904/727 trans including the convertor. On a pan drop/rebuild with the convertor already filled, it states 5 quarts/8.5 quarts, then fill to "add one pint" mark, let trans run to operating temp, then check again. Should be at or just below full. I also heard F was very similar to B&M quick shift. Id go with Dextron, or ATF4 in a newer jap trans FWD Chryco/DSM model.
