Mod Top Cars

Hello

I just recently purchased a 1969 340 Dart Swinger.I am told by the owner that it was a mod top car.How can I find out if it is a real mod top car,are there any codes anywhere such as on the trim tag.If so I will post the trim tag info for decoding. The car is originally Black on Black, bench seat factory 4 speed but is an auto on column now. When talking to the owner he said when his Dad gave him the car it had a hideous green and yellow flowered top.Being his Dad owned a Dodge Dealership he said he took it immediately to the body shop and had them remove the top and paint the car.Car still has all of the original interior and it is excellent except for one small tear in rear seat about 1" lomg, and of course carpet has a hole where the 4 speed used to be.Been painted on time and has never had any rust anywhere.I am thinking of putting a mod top on the car if it is in fact a real mod top Swinger.Does anyone know if the material is availiable and if so where.

Thanks

Bobby

I'm no expert but according to this source ( http://www.mymopar.com/6971opcodes.htm ) you should have code V1H on the fender tag.

Everything sounds right about your car. The Swinger would have had the green top. Supposedly there were no Mod Top cars that did not have the Mod interior. You might have a very special car. Go to www.mooresmopars.com They have a section devoted to Mod Top cars and they can hook you up with a place to get the top material. 1969 and 70 were the only years for Mod Top cars.

Black car, mod top, white stripe, that car is so cool! That's exactly why I love old Mopars. You see so many interesting variations. I hope you put it back original as far as those options go. I bet you won't be seeing another one like it at the shows and cruise-ins.

Bobby,

Congrats on your purchase of a 1-of-50 LM23 Swinger 340 Mod Top! Definitely a black 340/4-speed Dart with black bench seats, Mod Top and white stripe would be very striking!

I have the Mod Top Registry, and the only people I know of who are reproducing the mod material are Layson's Restorations. You'll have to talk with a restorer about how much material yardage you would need for your vinyl top.

Like I mention on my website, the repro mod material that I've personally seen is done with quality, the colors looked correct, but the black lines in the printing on the vinyl-type material are thicker than NOS. For you, that wouldn't be a problem since you're not trying to match original material to this repro material (they would look similar, but obviously different because of the difference in the black line thickness).

Just as an aside, the Mod Top and mod interior could be ordered separately on the Barracuda and the Satellite (as stated in the 1969 Color and Trim books), but I don't have any info on the 1969 Darts (or Coronets/SuperBees) to know whether or not the mod interior could be ordered at all ... On the mod interior, there were mod material inserts in the front and rear seats, and also mod inserts in the door panels.

I don't have any Mod Top Darts in my registry that have a mod interior, but then again, I only have 7 Darts (Swingers, GTs and GTS's) out of over 100 Mod Tops total, so there may be some out there with both the Mod Top and mod interior and I just don't know about them.

Hope that helps!

Julie, '69 340/727 mod interior Barracuda + Mod Top Registry

P.S. If you already submitted something to the Mod Registry about your Dart, I didn't get it, so you need to submit it again. Thanks.
