Isky cams?

Hi guys and gals:

I wrote a while back about my 974 heads, anyway I'm building a 360, which will take me a while to round up all the cash, and I want to get 400HP from it on premium (93 octane) gas. This will be a street driven car. Combination will be as follows:

.030" over speed pro hypereutectic pistons and rings (about 9:1); KB's are over 10.5 which makes me nervous with pinging.
Carter 750 cfm carb
Edelbrock air gap dual plane intake
Windage tray
974 heads with 2.02 intakes and a bit of home polishing or Edelbrock aluminum if I can win an ebay auction at a decent price

Drivetrain will be:
727 with B&M transpak
8 1/4 " diff with 3.91 gears

Question is:

Should I go for the mopar 284 cam, the Comp cams Magnum 280H or isky's 280 megacam which has a bit more lift? Anyone tried this brand? I know compcams and mopar have good reputations, but isky is suppossed to be the world's largest cam manufacturer. I'm trying to stick with a hydraulic cam to save some dough.

I have seen a lot of discussion on this forum which would discourage me from buying a MOPAR Performance cam. Comp makes good cams, but I think you might want to check out Hughes and Crane as well. I used a Crane, because I wanted all my valve train from the same manufacturer, and Crane had the only full roller, street aluminum rockers I could afford.

Next time it will be a Hughes cam with Jesl rockers.

400 HP will not be hard to make! Also check out Comps Xtreme Line of cams! They are a faster rate of lift, and cutting edge technology! Not some 25 year old grind. I run a comp xtreme cam i think 230/236 Dur@ .050 and .488/491 lift. This thing makes real street power!

yo

i think you should consider comp cams xtreme energy .

i put a comp cams 292 in my 360 with the same pistons, edel. heads with a little port + polish and port matching, 750 dp holley and a 727 with a 2400 stall and 411 gears on a 8 3/4.

on the dyno i am pushing around 520 hp and 625 with a hundred shot of juice.

just something to consider.

I was an Isky Dealer for years and I know Richard well I've used dozens of their cams and goodies in Sprint Car engines with great success.

I have also been on the Comp Racer program since 1982 and have used their cams and components in dozens of motors without any failures.

I currently run a custom grind Huggin's Cam...If it were me....I would still call Jim Doyle at Racer Brown and have him grind me one for my Mopar, which I will be doing next year when I get my "J" heads ready to install.

Pretty much all of the aftermarket cams I've tried over the years have been top notch quality pieces, but I believe that after studying the profiles and base circles of many manufacturers that Racer Brown has probably got this whole Mopar deal figured out....MP cams...No Thanks! been there recently...wouldn't touch one with a ten foot stick.

Just my 2 cents worth, remember free advise is usually worth what you paid for it:D

360 CAM

I have been checking cams on my desktop dyno for a 360 for a couple of hours and with the information you have given me 400 horsepower is not hard to get but it will be expensive. If this is a street car are you sure you want HP or torque. Torque comes on long before HP which means you don't have to rev the snot out of your engine. Any way here are the numbers that I get with the dyno. Using a Comp Cam with .460 lift 284 Dur. 68 overlap 108 lobe center. = 401 HP @ 6000 rpm & 397 lb. of torque @4500. Note this requires a single plane intake and 9.3 compression. Using the dual plane intake yields 374 HP @ 5500 & 385 lb. @4500. Using a Comp Cam with .430 int lift, .440 ext lift. 252 int dur. and 250 ext dur. 36 overlap 107.5 center I got these numbers. 417 lb. tq. @ 2000 rpm droping off to 402 lb. @ 4000 with 322 HP @ 4500 rpm and droping to 302 Hp @ 5500. This is similar to what I plan for my next project with My 440. By the way you get to keep the dual plane manifold with this cam.:)

I guess it depends on what you mean by "expensive"... 400 HP shouldn't cost all that much. Very achievable with a pretty mild 360.

Another pretty cheap way would be a 150 horse nitrous shot on a 250 horsepower engine. Should be fun while it lasts!

Hello guys! Thanks for the good advice. I think I'll try a comp cams extreme energy- I'll check their catalog. Looks like it's a good choice of performance vs. cost. I should probably do me a favor and get Desktop Dyno to tweak the combo before spending my money.

Forgot this one. 6 packin, how good is the idle with that cam?
