2000 Dodge Durago

I have a 2000 Dodge Durago 4x4 that I need to replace the right rear axle seal. What is the proper way to replace this seal. Would it be a smart move to replace both seals L/R at this time that I replace the right one.
Any and all help would be much appreciated. thanks the grinchsdawg

Welcome to the board.

To replace the seal the axle shaft must first be removed. Removing the axle shaft involves removing the rear cover, removing the differential cross shaft, removing the "C" clip retainer and withdrawing the axle shaft. Once the shaft is out, the seal can easily be replaced in the conventional way of prying out the old seal and driving in a replacement.

Be aware that a leaking seal isn't always just a faulty seal, the outer end of the axle shaft rides in a roller bearing which often fails and the debris damages the seal. Once the axle shaft is removed, inspect the bearing surface and bearing rollers for brinneling.

What John said.

I always replace both seals.
