something broke
I went outside to put my 1973 duster away for the winter ,I thought it had a flat tire on the left front but tire was inflated and way up into fender so much that I cant turn the steering wheel drove the car last weekend to a car show to get some drive time no problem at all.Jacked it up and found nothing out of place except t bar adjusting screw not in right place so is it possible the socket in the lower control arm spun? or are there other places to look. I was lucky this happened in my drive way and sitting still . many thanks

It broke the torsion bar mount either out of the K-frame end or at the back. Very common and both are repairable. Look for signs of rust at both ends.

how do you repair ?weld the socket after turning it into the right place or do they have some type of kit to buy. THANKS
|
Front end the easiest thing is just replace the K frame. If there is not alot of rust you may be able to repair it.
The rear end will need a Saf-T-Cap repair section. People give them a lot of crap, but I have used one and it is fine. Would I use one on a real race car or a high dollar restoration? No, but they work fine on a daily driver type car. |
I came across a web sight that sell the complete cross member around $ 350 new ,don't know the quality. but its been to cold to find the problem ,as to which t-bar end failed . this is a rust free car so I'm a little surprised this happened, and didn't see any signs of the welds cracked(no rust streaks )

Did you establish what the problem was?
How did you fix it? |
He hasn't posted here since last April. He may or may not stop in to view.

And he may or may not get notifications of answers to his question...
I'm curious to know. . |
