Exhaust Manifold Studs

Well, my "Hemi Tick" has gotten progressively worse and startup in the morning sounds like parts are going to blow through the hood. It quiets down as it warms up. My dealer knew exactly what it was, broken exhaust manifold studs. I was told it is a common issue that they have experience with. If the stud is broken off flush with the head, they weld a nut on top and turn it out. It can run $200 to $300 if they don't run into problems.

There is a fair amount of info on the web as well as videos. Unfortunately, the replacement Mopar studs are the same and eventually they will fail too.

$200-300 is pretty cheap. When I do GM trucks I usually estimate at least 4 hours. You never know what your going to run into.

I'd replace all of the studs if I was going to have a manifold off. I'd also remove the thread locker from the stud, tap the holes in the head and use anti-sieze. Plenty of it too.

Truck has really gotten loud and the CEL came on and it started stumbling. At the dealer today for all new studs, nuts and gaskets.

Dealer called a little while ago to inform me that a flex section of the Y pipe has completely rotted away. Replacement is over $1400. I asked if it was covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty, since it connects to the converter, but that warranty has expired.

Dealer suggested that after they fix the broken studs, that I take the truck to a local shop that does custom exhausts. That shop has experience welding in a new flex coupling.

Keeping my fingers crossed and my wallet open.

Just out of curiosity , how many miles on the truck?

My truck just turned 75,000 miles. The stud repair was $505 and the Y-pipe repair was $50. The repair bill was about a 50/50 split for parts and labor.

All in all, I am happy with the way it turned out.
