I have a '97 1500 4x4 360. It seems like my PCM has decided to give up. I have had nothing but problems for the last couple months, different idiot lights turning off and on for no apparent reason. I called around and found one out of a truck identical to mine at a local recycle yard. Question is, do I need to get it reprogrammed? I understand that I will still need to go to the dealer and have the VIN and milage put it. Is this necessary? What is a reasonable charge for this service?

Welcome aboard!
I think the dealer flash of mileage & VIN is for '98 and new Rams. You can probably get the recycled one, put it on, and drive away smiling. There may be a difference between 4X4 and 4X2 PCMs though - maybe someone who knows more than me can post an answer here soon. ------------------ Kenny "The Mighty Dodge": 2000 Intense Blue Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport SLT+, 5.9 L, Auto, 3.55 Sure Grip, Heavy Duty Service Group (big battery, transmission oil cooler, & heavy-duty engine cooling), MOPAR tonneau, MOPAR bedliner, MOPAR Ram mudflaps, MOPAR side moldings, Flowmaster 50-series SUV muffler with heat shield, Belltech rear sway bar, JBA silver ceramic coated headers, Quick D throttle body, K&N Gen II FIPK, MOPAR PCM, 180 degree thermostat, MOPAR R/T Cam Package (cam & lifters), new valve springs & retainers, and new timing chain, and sometimes a full tank of premium gas. Red Rocket,
I think the question that should be asked is, what lights are turning on and off. The PCM is one of the last things I would think the problem would be, these do not fail on a regular basis. ------------------ 70 challenger r/t conv 72 383 swinger, 90 5th Ave, 98 V-10 Q/C SWB 4x4 |
