Ok, my friend is putting a new exhaust on his truck and hes having trouble choosing a muffler, he has it down to three choices, A Dynomax Bullet and split the pipes after that. A Flowmaster 40 Series Single In/Out and split the pipes after that. And A 40 series single in/dual out. Right now he has a blown out cat and straight pipes with 4 inch tips, but I agree with him when he says it sounds raggedy, it has to much sharp cackle and not enough bass. which of these muffs would deaden the cackle and add a throaty rich rumble to the exhaust?? Other muffler recommendations would help too.
Thanx in advance!

ok here goes..... i went through the SAME problem ... i went with the 40 series single in dual out ... and instead of running pipes i just put some turndowns on it .... sounds GREAT! i love it it's reallllllly deep at about 1500 and 1800 rpms .. its got alot of vibration it's the best i m o i'd say when my friend had the 40 on his r/t dak with the pipe it quieted it down a BUNCH but... just my opinion oh and how do u like those headers??

I dont really like the Flowtech's, they are pretty crappy as far as quality goes. But they are headers, and they were cheap i think. But i am going to get some Gibsons or JbAs soon i hope. He says he doesnt want turndowns because he likes the look of out the back exhausts.

got20s 02-20-2001 09:13 PM

ah thats what i was afraid of with the headers... about the exhaust though i would recommend the single in dual outlet 40 series with pipes out the back if he wants that .... with some big tips so it sounds even better.... there ya go :)

The Dyno Max Bullets are straight through mufflers and will not have a deep throaty sound but will have good hp potential. The Flowmaster will have a pretty good sound but it is somewhat restrictive. The inlet ID is not a full tube size on most of their mufflers. The Hooker Aero Chamber has it all, sound and performance. I have ran all of these mufflers on my race cars and the Hooker Aero that I used on my Camaro sounds good! And you see my 1/4 mile time in my signature.

got20s 02-20-2001 09:53 PM

hey larry wow just exhaust made your camaro that fast???? lol j/k i was looking at the aero flow ... i couldn't find one aroudn w/o ordering and i didn't wanna wait so....f lowmaster it is

got20s,

I have a little more than just a Hooker catback system but I do have the factory cam in my Camaro. Also I know the Hooker Aero Chamber is a super flowing muffler because when I open my cutout I get very little, if any, et gain.

got20s 02-20-2001 10:44 PM

lol i was just messin with ya :) thats pretty good for stock cam though! good luck

i have mopars headers and a magnaflow single in dual out muffler with stainless 3" exhaust and with stainless resonators on my 97 sst, it sounds great ,low and throaty. I also have a 79 corvette with headers no cats and duals with flowmaster mufflers, the flowmasters sound tinny when you are acelerating and pop when decelerating from about 50-60 or so, but they do make the vette run well, but magnaflow is far superior in sound all trough the rpm range, thats just my opion.

greatgonzo,

Do you have any pics of those headers and exhaust?

OshinDivr 02-21-2001 10:51 AM

Ramdude, less than a week ago I had a 40 series, single inlet/dual outlet muffler installed with a pipe running out behind each tire. I was extremely pleased with the low, deep rumble it produced. The interior resonance was less than I expected, and far less than my Cobra. Hope this helps.

kirkyg 02-21-2001 03:33 PM

larrys, im sorry im goign to disagree that the 40 series is pretty restrictive... a 2 chamber is not restrictive at all. thats how it produces so much sound.

I'm also going to wave the Flowmaster 40 Series single in, dual out flag here. I love it. But I'm sure any louder exhaust modification would have made me happy.
By the way... A guy here where I live has a Durango (5.2 or 5.9 not sure which) with the stock exhaust on it, and it seems even quieter than the stock exhaust on my Ram did.

LarryS 02-21-2001 05:14 PM

kirkyg,

You are probably right about he 2 chamber Flows. I had 3 chambers on a Mustang at one time and gained .2 in the 1/4 with ATI stainless steel mufflers. Those are straight through just like the Bullets but a lot more expensive. They had that raspy sound too.

kirkyg 02-21-2001 05:42 PM

From what i've heard the 5.9L sounds quieter stock but has the biggest sound potential...i know this is wierd but can anyone else say they've noticed the same thing. I know that my bosses 5.9L dodge he used to have was quieter than my 5.2L both stock. IT really makes no sense except maybe they were trying to tone it down.

THANX

thanx guys for all your replies. But i have one last question. he has the staight duals already, so will a 40 series single in/out before the split sound the same as a 40 series single in/ dual out?? it will cost much less to do that than it would to get all new pipes bent.

thanx

single in/out 40 series

He said he really wants the Single In/Out Flow instead of the Single in/dual out Flow. It will cost 45 bucks to get the single/dual, as compared to 8 bucks for the single in/out, what do u guys think?

kirkyg 02-22-2001 12:28 AM

It'll be louder...but you wont enjoy it as much without the look of dual out.

kirkyg

RAMDUDE 02-22-2001 05:39 PM

No, see he already has duals, he just wants to put the single in/out before they split off into tailpipes, u know?
But he went and got one today, he will be back later, I'll let you know what he thinks about it!

Jared

K Rich 02-22-2001 08:42 PM

If the duals split VERY close to the exit of the muffler, it should sound the same, or similar. The 2 mufflers are, after all, identical, except for the number of outlets.
