Default Goodbye PT (this time for good)......

.

Chrysler's long-lived PT Cruiser will finally roll off into the sunset
next month after a decade in production. According to the Detroit Free
Press, when the 2010 model year winds down at Chrysler's Toluca,
Mexico plant on July 9, the final Cruisers will be produced. The
retro-styled five door hatchback was a sensation when it debuted and
inspired customers to pay a premium over the sticker price to get
one. Over the years, the styling was tweaked only slightly its
competitiveness declined significantly as DaimlerChrysler steadfastly
refused to invest in it.

The Cruiser was originally earmarked for discontinuation a year ago,
but when Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, it needed product, so the
automaker kept it alive for another 12 months. The Toluca factory
will now be re-tooled for production of another retro-design small
car, the Fiat 500 which joins the Chrysler lineup later this year.

Note : I, for one, am sorry to see the PT go away. The Fiat 500 ......

Our two (160k on the 1st, 70k on the present) were pretty good. Although both did need lower control arm bushings (warranty work). When this 2nd one wears out I wouldn't know what to buy as an equivalent replacement. I already have a truck so I only would need something like the PT. From your perspective, what do you see as a good PT replacement ?

There is the Dodge Caliber. Sizewise they appear similar. However I am not really familiar with them as far as reliability is concerned. I believe their engines were a new design.

My '03 is the worst Chrysler vehicle I have ever owned. It sits dead in the driveway w/104K. It's difficult to work on, drives poorly (when running) it's slow lousy on gas & not fun to drive ever.

The Fiat 500 is made in Poland right now. My girlfriend has a really old Italian-made one.

Chrysler needs some good small cars to sell that get exceptional mileage & are fun to drive I don't know if the Fiat 500 will fill that hole in their line up. The Fiat cars will be sold in separate stores anyway.

They ought to brand 'em Dodge, and call it Neon, along with the Abarth turbo version.

They made a big mistake when they gassed the Neon. They were good cars that sold faster than they could make them. But the suits needed the plant to build the stupid caliber. I went thru 2 neons and now I'm into a Caliber. Its so gutless and has huge A pillar blind spots. I'd rather have my 02 Neon R/T back any day. Oh, and I wouldn't trade my Dream Cruiser 3 for the world. I'll have that one for a very long time.

Why I like my '01 Cruiser: Steering is quick and light with good turn in; it has reasonable low-end acceleration; it can haul a lot for a car its size; it's comfortable for four adults; headlights are good, outstanding compared to Chrysler headlights of the '90s.

If I were king I would have made it about 5% larger and offered it with the 2.7.
