Default 4 wheel drive

my four wheel drive seems like its stuck in four high, even after i put the truck in nuetral and put it back in 2WD. i dont know what is wrong or how easy a fix it is, but i want to replace the 4WD alltogether, because i pretty much want to revamp the whole thing, but i have no idea how much it would cost, or where to find one. any suggestions?

Yeah some vehicle info would be helpful.

What is leading you to believe that it is in 4wd?

And what do you mean when you say you want to replace your 4wd all together?

1984 ram prospector, long bed, 318, 727, 4WD, 4' lift,

i think it is stuck because of the constant whine that is typically only heard when the truck is in 4WD, and because the truck is an automatic, but when begining to drive i have to drop it to third, then shift up into second, then first, its like driving a stick.

and what i mean is that i want to revamp everything, front and rear differential, engine trans, suspension, everything.

I am asuming that you mean that you have to shift fthe tranny from 1st, to 2nd, and then 3rd in order to get it moving. I am also assuming that you mean the truck will not move if it is left in drive. That sounds like a tranny problem to me and not a fwd problem. My guess would be a busted sprag in the tranny. A tranny with a busted sprag will whine like you described if put in drive. It happened to me with a d-150 auto. It had a 727 auto. If the truck is staying in four by four after you shift out of, the first thing I would check is the vacum actuator that sits on top of of the front diff. They tend to become sticky or otherwise fail to work. (bad vacum etc.) It is a cheap easy fix.
Just some thoughts. I hope this helps.
Brian.

My '93 Ramcharger only "sticks" when I go way too long rotating/replacing tires. When the rears wear more than the fronts past a certain point it doesn't come out of 4 wheel drive "easy". I usually have to find a mud puddle, wet grass, or hose down the driveway real wet so the tires can slip and have it come out.
