Default fuel issue(fuel filter)

I have a 94 318 5spd the last 2 weeks every now and then when i put my truck under a little load it will sputter starting around 1650 rpm. once it starts to sputter if i put the pedal to the floor it will make a nasty nocking clank noise the rpms climb slowly and it will keep sputtering till 3500 rpms and then take off like it should. I checked the plugs and compression. Put some bg in it and cleaned the throttle body. drove 40 miles and i can still get it to do it some times. It would also die every once and a while if i rev the motor to 4000 rpm and let off fast . It would boble below idle and die. I doesnt seem to do that now thought since cleaning. And my temp gauge quit working around the same time. My guess is it the pump or the pressure regulator or maybe injector hopefully its the filter which i just bought. I didnt know the filter was on top of the tank
thats going to be fun. I am open to any ideas. How can u test a injector. do i have to release the presssure in the rails to change the filter?

Are you sure the filter is on top of the tank? Later years have the filter as part of the pump, which is in the tank.

A dealer or a garage could test the pressure at the fuel rail and confirm if the pump is weak. Internally mounted pumps can be accessed either by dropping the tank or lifting the box.

If the temp sender has failed, the PCM is running with invalid information. That could be a large part of your problem.

When you change out the sender, disconnect the battery for at least 5 minutes. This will default the PCM. As you state that your problems started at the same time as the gauge not working, odds are this will fix your problem.
