Question

I am trying to find a way to be able to control the torque converter lock-up on my '98 Ram with the V-10. When towing at 70-75 MPH it would be nice to be able to keep the converter from locking up when in OD. (leaving the trans in drive runs a lot more RPM's) It seems as soon as the motor is loaded down the trans down-shifts to 3rd. I think if I could bypass lock-up in OD the converter would raise the RPM's 200-450 and this would keep the engine better in the power band at this speed. Thanks for any info on the subject. AJ

Bad idea, First the OD unit is the weakest link in that transmission. 2nd By not allowing the converter to lock-up would cause HEAT & that would spell death... But if you must, get the pin-out for the tranny & put yourself in an inline switch for the lockup..Then you can control it in 3rd & 4th.

V10nacuda is right, DON'T do it! Your better off running it with the o/d off & convertor locked up due to major heat buildup - this will make your trans last longer - The heat will harden the seals which will leak & then burn the clutches. Would be a good idea to have the throttle valve cable checked for proper adjustment - This will cause erratic down shifts. Hope this helps!

the trans will overheat with out lock up. the only time trans has full cooler flow is when coverter is locked. it takes fluid to keep the coverter unlocked thru the input shaft .when locked the fluid that kept the converter unlocked is now directed to the cooler. looked 100% flow unlocked about 60% i proved it to my self with a preasure gauge

Thanks for all the info guys, I guess I'll have to either try to use 3rd gear or OD. AJ
