okay everyone... i installed a mopar pcm and a k&n gen II on my ram last fri night. it's been working great...nice power and gas mileage. only complaint is the spark knock. it really sucks. i replaced my thermostat out to a 180 sun morning. the knocking cut down considerably...but it's still pretty bad. what i don't get is that we just had a cold front come through...and the temp is in the 55-65's. and it's still knocking! what i've found is that it does it most at 75% to full throttle...over 50mph...and at approx 3000 rpm and above. do i just need to keep waiting for this thing to "learn"? it's on the 2nd tank of 93 octane... the first tank got a spike of boost up 3points. that's what i've done so far...and that's the status. i need some help here. thanks!
eric meadows btw...the 180 stat, 55 degree temp, and 3 point octane booster all together still knocked. ------------------ 94 Ram 1500 RegCab SWB White/Silver, 5.9L Auto, Clear Tail Lenses, Stillen Polished Billet Grill, PIIA 510 Pencil Beam Driving Lights, Chrome Diff Plate w/ 3.54's, Mopar Performance Valve Covers, K&N Gen II, Mopar PCM, FlowPro Cat, MagnaFlow Muffler w/ dual rear exits. might want to check your bellypan gasket.. shine a light down the TB bores and look for excessive amounts of oil. Also might want to check at the back of the manifold, by the distributor for fresh oil, this would indicate a blow rear intake seal.

If you haven't already, run some fuel injector cleaner through a couple of tanks of gas. I had a '94 with similar mods that would knock the same way and the cleaner always solved the problem. Good Luck

My '94 318 used to ping on 87 octane with the stock PCM, k&n filtercharger and 3" exhaust so I used to run 92 octane to compensate. Switching to the MP PCM (still 92 octane) has resulted in no audible knock at all, even with the stock 195 stat. Maybe you have the leaking intake manifold gasket problem that is contributing to the knock.

jemeadows- From my own experience, I discovered that it took a few tanks of gas before the knocking would decrease. What really finished off the knocking on my truck was to run 1 range colder plugs. While your at it, I'd recommend replacing the cap and rotor....just for the heck of it. That would also be a good time to look for the oil spray the Jon mentioned.
Good Luck! -MAGNUMFORCE |
