The bigger Ram engines for 2003 seem to have a big mystery. There is very little difference between 5.7L and 6.1L, but there is a huge difference between 6.1L and 8.1L. Why would Chrysler build 2 engines so close together in size? It seems the next size engine after the 5.7L should be 7.0L, not 6.1L. (7.0L = 426 ci, BTW)

I heard (may not be fact) the 5.7L was built to meet the guidlelines of Nascar so that it could be raced. But like you say, why build one so close like the 6.1L?

NASCAR would not let Chrysler use the Hemi citing "Unfair Advantage". NASCAR even gave hassles to Chrysler over the new Wedge racing engine stating something again about unfair advantage - cylinder bores spaced far enough apart so bigger valves than Ford and Chevy uses could be put in. ------------------ Kenny The Mighy Dodge: 2000 Intense Blue Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport SLT+, 5.9 L, Auto, 3.55 Sure Grip, Heavy Duty Service Group (big battery, transmission oil cooler, & heavy-duty engine cooling), MOPAR tonneau, MOPAR bedliner, MOPAR Ram mudflaps, MOPAR side moldings, Flowmaster 50-series SUV muffler with heat shield, Belltech rear sway bar, JBA silver ceramic coated headers, Quick D throttle body, K&N Gen II FIPK, MOPAR PCM, 180 degree thermostat, R/T Cam Package (cam & lifters), new valve springs & retainers, and new timing chain, and sometimes a full tank of premium gas. About the engine sizes being so close, I have no clue. Maybe they are planning on putting 3 different V8's in the 1500?!?
My thoughts are they may use the 4.7 to replace the old 3.9 (as the base engine), the 5.7 to replace the 318, and the 6.1 to replace the 360. Or maybe they plan on just the 4.7 & 5.7 in 1500's and the 6.1 as a performance engine (with more power) for the next ss/t or full size r/t . Or the most logical guess would probibly be 4.7 & 5.7 in the 1500's, and the 6.1 and 8.1 in the 2500, 3500. And I'm guessing that if they did that, the 6.1 would be a "workhorse" that is alot slower reving, more geared for work (like our 360's now) than the 353. But it DOES seem like there would be a bigger difference in the two engine's sizes! .4 Liters has got to be the closest between two production engines of the same company. And about Nascar...I hope that we don't get banned for another 30 years for stomping everyone again! Also, keep in mind the new Hemi's are hybrids...they only have a few characteristics of the old hemis...infact the OHC motors ford and chevy have now that put out the extra hp are using a modified (stolen) hemi like shape cylinders. This is atleast what Jon Smith told me and he knows his stuff. Only dodge knows how to do a hemi design right tho .
