First off, I'm going appologize for the long subject title. So anyway what RPM should I be shifing at when I'm manual shifting my auto/360 for racing. What RPM will hurt my engine.

With no mods you are looking at around 4,700 to 4,800 RPM's.

The only real why to find out is bring to the track and try 4,600 and 4,700 and 4,800 and 4,900 and you get the point.

Hope this helps

4800, any later and you'll likely bounce the rev limiter. I shift at 4800 and the shift is completed by 5,200 that leaves very little room for error.
The biggest thing is consistency. You won't see a big gain from manual shifting but the auto is inconsistent so atleast you'll ensure the tranny won't shift early on you. Try shifting from second to third at about 4,600.

Default shift at 5200

stock it shifts at 4800 so why manual shift it at 4800?i took mine to the track and experimented with that and found if i shifted at 5200 that gave me the biggest gain-1/10th off of leaving it in drive-phil

Default WOT shifting

With all this talk aboot WOT shift points for best time, it has me wondering. After my Transgo shift install, my 1-2, 2-3 shift happens at 4800 rpm. I installed the stiffest orange spring into the TV assembly and adjusted the PR adjustment bolt just past flush. I don't know what my WOT shift points were stock. From what Openclasspro said, stock WOT is 4800. Is this right? If so, I guess I need to increase line pressure or adjust TV eh?

98 SS/T 360 you should shift at 5000rpms on a stock motor. 5300 with the full r/t kit in your truck. you should always shift 10% over the max hp point of the cam. i even shift at 5300 with all my mods.
thanks cmyindy

To really use the above Java calculator correctly, you need to figure in some slip for the torque converter.

The stock Ram torque converter stalls at about 1800 rpm, and slips decreases from about 30-40% at 2000 rpm to about 7-10% at 4000 rpm.

Thumbs up Thanks for the help!

Thanks, I always wondered if there was a big gain in manual shifting but now I know and I'll have to try (at the best RPM).

Ok, I got a question then. When I got my Mopar pcm, it upped the shift pointed, now it shift at 5200rpm at WOT. I know this is because the pcm is actually part of the R/T package. I don't have the R/T cam yet, so I am guessing my high shifting at WOT isn't optimal, nor can it be very good for my engine as that puts my WOT shifting into the red. So am I risking any damage to my engine? (if so then it gives me another very good reason to get the R/T cam)

With the stock PCM if you shift at 5200 you will definately bounce the rev limiter.

Stock they don't always shift at 4800, that's the main benefit of shifting manualy.

Default definetley bouncing rev limiter at 5200?-not!

i've taken mine to 5500 and it hasn't done that!- reason i said 5200 was best is with all the times I manual shifted from 4900 to 5500-5200 consistently gave me 1/10th off better times- before you ask -my truck is a 01' with stock ignition and it DID NOT cut out and rev limiter did not bounce as you say even up to 5500-also it doesn't ping on 87-pulled a enclosed car trailer today with a hemi cuda in it- i couldn't make the thing ping if i wanted to-phil

yeah, but he is running a 98. All I know is if I shift at 4800 it completes at 5200 and I am running a 98 like him.

also, the redline on the tach is just a warning, not the actual mechanical limit of the engine. going past redline is not going to hurt it.

Ok, well I have never noticed the rev limiter when shifting at WOT, but then again probably because I have to performance PCM. I know when I had the stock pcm, it would shift at 4800, now with the performance pcm it shifts at 5200rpm. I guess what I am getting at is after 4800rpm, the truck is just making a whole lot of noise and no power. It just seems like instead of letting it go al the way up to 5200rpm before shifting, get it to shift sooner so your truck doesn't eat up valueable time above your optimal rpm range when running a 1/4 mile. From what I have heard, with the R/T cam shaft, the engine will then make power right up to 5200rpm, which would make sence why the performance pcm shifts at 5200. Can anyone confirm this?

Thoughts, comments?
