Question Over-center rotation torque adjustment

Replaced the pitman shaft seal on my '99 steering gear box. But not sure sequence for performing the over-center torque adjustment. Anybody 'got any ideas???? I've buttoned everything up, but left the preload adjuster nut loose, until I can figure out the over-center rotation torque adjustment........

5in.lbs higher than the preload?

Post General rule of thumb for me is

Snug the center adjuster bolt down(don't tighten, just snug) with the steering box centered. Then back off 1/4 turn & tighten jamb nut. When turning the wheel back & forth with engine running, you should not feel the wheel get stiff as it nears center of travel. If it does, then back the adjuster off a little more. If you have the adjuster to tight it will wear the gears faster & not want to return correctly on a turn(ie. to stiff). Hope this helps!

There is actually a TSB on this.
Box must be removed from truck and all fluid drained, turn lock to lock to expell all fluid or adjustments inaccurate.
The spec is to get the over center adjustment so that no more than(I think its 6ft/lbs) turning torque on the pitman arm when brining it over centerin either direction. That is the key, must be adjusted so that torque is the same when turning either direction.

What about re-installing your steering shaft coupler back on the splined shaft of the steering gear box ? do you only need to be sure that the steering wheel inside the cab was left in the middle position(not turned either left or right after you had pulled the steering shaft coupler off the steering gear box when the front wheels were in the straight ahead position) AND either the original or new steering gear box your re-installing is in the centered position half way from either end lock ???? if you have these two conditions are you guaranteed to get the positioning right ?

if someone got inside the cab and started turning the steering wheel while steering shaft unhooked from steering box isn't there a spring or something up in the cab that gets damaged?? because you don't have the benefit of the locks in either direction in the steering gear stopping you from going too far ??

This thread is 14 years old and the latest post from any of these guys was in 2006. One poster passed away several years ago. I doubt any of them reply.
