Default Tachometer problem

I have a freind with a 97 4x4 ram with 5.9 and auto. We know the truck has aftermarket exhaust and k&n. When ever he gets on the gas, the speddometer gets up to around 85mph and the tachometer is right at redline. if he gives it anymore gas the needle will go into the red. The truck is very quick even with with biggers tires and the 3.55(pretty sure they are still stock) gears. He bought the truck used with 53,000 miles on it and he says it may have a chip. I know its fast enough to smoke my 93 4x4 dakota with 318 and auto. He is tired of being held back by the redline. thanks.

Are you saying that when he gets on it to go faster than 85 he's already at the redline? If so then something does seem out of place. Sounds like his tranny is in another gear and not shifting into the higher gear at the redline. Thats just my asumption. Someone here might give you more help than this. But it's a start.

the only way that he could be at redline with bigger tires is too low of gears. But even with 3.55 gears he'd have to have huge tires to only be going 85 and redlining. Still looks like tranny problem to me.

The problem persists. Last night we were racing a newer Chevy Tahoe and when we really started to get going all we got were a series of skips or shudders and possibly some bangs out of the exhaust. I still cant figure out how he beat my dakota.
