Default removing exhaust studs

Any tricks in trying to remove the exhaust studs on a 383? I'm putting on new headers and need to replace some of the studs with bolts for clearance reasons. BUT can't back out the studs by doubling up on the nuts and dont want to put vice grips on the studs cause I'm afraid I still wont be able to get the stud out and then I'd also have mashed up threads. andy suggestions?

They are probably stuck in there pretty tight. I'd soak them with penetrant and tap the end of the stud to try and dislodge it. Worse case scenario is when the stud breaks off and then you have to drill it out. Helicoils are often needed at that point, depending on your ability to get the drill bit exactly centered.
I'd just get new studs, then work the old ones out gently with vice grips.
Even if you didn't mess up the threads, you'd be risking having a old stud break when you go to tighten up the manifold.
PS: When installing the new studs, give them a slight coating of RTV silicon to prevent any seepage leaks and this will also help keep them from getting stuck in the future.
Don't forget, give the stud a sharp whack on the end with a hammer to dislodge it first!

I used a stud remover on my 440, they all came right out.

Do remember that the studs are into the coolant passages so you will get coolant leaking out when you remove them & you need to put thread sealant on the bolts before install or they will leak.

Yes, I've got one of those stud removers, just afraid it will snap the stud or I wont be able to get the stud out and I'll ruin the threads. Guess I just need more guts about doing this
