I'm fairly familiar with the 8 3/4 axle, as well as most of the later model axles. But, I wonder what you folks who hop up the flathead do to hop up the rear axle as well? I mean, after you put on the finned head and the dual carbs, if you rev up that old six and drop the hammer, does it shear the keyways off of the axle? The axle in my 54 Chrysler looks very similar to a later 8 3/4, is there any parts interchange possible? I'm mainly just curious if any of you other FM fans have had to deal with this much, thanks!

Old timers who I talked to about this told me the thing to do was the have an additional keyway cut 180 opposite the stock keyway and use two keys cause it was entirely possible to shear the keys. The thing to ensure this works is a tight fitting keyway and a competent shop to do the work. Personally, I swap in a later axle, I have a 9 1/4 out of a 79 Newport in my 38, If I break that I'll be happy.

Does anyone know what different rear ends were used? How about parts compatability?
What ratios are available? Were the Plymouth, Doddge, Desoto and Chrysler interchangeable? I have a '39 Chrysler with a 4.1:1 rear. 3.9 and 4.3 were also used that year. The 3.9 in the coupe and 4.3 in the 7 passenger. I would like to use something like 3.7 or 3.5. Stoga- what ratio does your '53 have? Thanks |

The factory parts book (P15 & D24)shows a 3.73 thru a 4.3 being available. I have never seen a 3.7 and I think they are pretty rare as they were a special "economy' factory order. The same diffs were used in the 1/2 Dodge trucks, (axles and pumpkins directly swap) and I think the truck went up to 4.6. According to Hollanders the same rear ends were used on just about all the mopar offering of that ea, so they are readily available in the boneyards. I have had 2 overhauled and had no problems getting parts. A 3.7/3.5 is pretty tall for the 218/230 FH 6. Standard on the Dodge/Ply was the 3.9 and 4.1 were often used. I would be surprised if the key sheared before the axle failed. (been there, done that) I am in the process up hopping up my 49 Dodge PU, but have elected to install a 1 ton drivetrain from a donor truck to avoid any potential problems.
