Default dead speedometer

I keep going through speedometers on my 91 shadow. After I pick one up at the salvage yard it only lasts about 6 months. Does anyone know what goes wrong with them and if there is anything I can do to fix or prevent it?

I'd like to know the answer to that also. I have problems with the odometers quitting which seems to be related to a malfunction in the trip meter. I've intended to take one apart and check it out but haven't had time to do that.
The speed/distance sensor will also go bad which will make the speedo quit, of course changing the speedo will not fix this problem.
